Just had my top end rebuilt
I was wondering that if the fellow pelicans thought that a puff of blue smoke at start-up would be acceptable after a fresh top end rebuild. They replaced all 6 exhaust valves. Doesn't the smoke indicate worn valve guides? Would these have been replaced during a routine rebuild? BTW the motor is an 3.0 SC 1983.

The puff at start up is normal even on a rebuilt engine.

I'd watch the overall oil consumption which should improve. Does your bill show valve guides were replaced?

That puff at startup is oil getting past the rings when the crank case fills to the level of the cylinders after parking overnight. There is no way that oil could travel uphill on the exhaust guides no matter how bad they were.
