I'm thinking of just fitting an air filter directly to the turbo's compressor and perhaps ordering a heat/weathershield protecting cover around the bottom of it, to reduce road dirt going into the filter.
Anyone on this board running a filter directly off the turbocharger? How quickly does it actually get dirty in this location? If I were to go down this route, I'd invest in a good washable & oilable air filter. I'd also think the air around that lower area would be much cooler than the air in/around the engine bay, right?

If you're getting rid of CIS it's no problem. I don't have any pics of my set up on this computer, but you could search for my previous posts. Due to the higher flow, I made a new larger intake pipe to the compressor. This may be more trouble than it's worth. Others, like DonE, have run a line straight out of the compressor around the inner fender and back into the engine compartment. I don't see why you could go straight off the compressor with a filter as long as it's sheilded from road debris.

Thanks guys. My local auto-parts store has a stainless steel arched heat/weather shield specifically designed for air filters. I think I'm going to give it a try and bolt a K&N directlky onto the GT35R I'm planning to install shortly. I had the compressor inlet machined down from 4" to 3.25" to make it easier to route intake pipes, but I think I'll go with the direct bolt on solution for now and see how that works out. I can always route the intake plumbing into the engine bay if I find it's getting dirty too quickly. At least I'll save some $$$ with intake plumbing for now

I think it is way to dirty to put the filter there.

It only takes a pebble the size of a pea to lunch a compressor blade. There are fewer pebbles as you increase the distance from the ground. Are exposed filters immune from road splash and mud too? No.

Here's a pic of mine. I built the inlet pipe from a 3" OD aluminum 90°. Even with the tightest elbow I could buy, it had to be cut and welded in a couple places to fit. I would have preferred to use 3-1/4" tubing but I couldn't get anything bigger in there.

The owner of this one lunched two new compressors because of the location of the air intake (enclosed air box over K&N filter). Note position of air box directly behind tire.

OK, I get the message. I'll do as Jerry and David did above. Can't afford to take the risk
