another A/C question: am i crazy?
OK, there was another post (http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/Forum3/HTML/001939.html) where Mike the Mechanic said his PO had taken out the air conditioning condenser and compressor for weight reasons. I was interested in reading that because, call me crazy, I was thinking of doing the same thing.
We’re lucky here on the Monterey Bay it’s never hot for more than 3 days and the fog rolls in. Also my car is a Cabriolet and the air con weight is behind the rear wheels, just where I don’t want it and lastly (argument bait) it’s a sports car! How much weight is back there in this stuff? Does it have any value to others? As far as I know, I only have the condenser under the rear lid. Somebody told me that I would diminish the resale value if I did this but I don’t ever plan on selling this car. I do plan on autocross and time trial. The roll bar weight is huge, where else can I easily save weight? Thanks for opinions and facts Andy YGOSLOW |

Andy:
The nice thing about Porsche is that you can remove everything one day, cap off the lines (you can leave them on, since they don't weight so much), and then you can put everything back together again in the future, and no new owner will ever know the difference. The only effort involved here is time, and it should be fun, since you will be getting a "lighter" car. The weight split front to rear is tremendous, and our Walking Encyclodedias should know what it is. But by removing the AC stuff, you will also be removing all obstructions to cooling air - air will now not have to pass the condensers, will have more surface area through which to pass, and hence your engine temps should go down a hair or two. Have fun - the only thing you'll lose is time....Andras |

Loose weight, do what I did and replace the old bumper system( about 50+lbs.) with a fiberglass type, (4lbs).
