I am building a 1973 RSR, need help.

Hey guys,

I picked up a 1973 with the turbo flares already welded on. It came with a decklid and some bumpers but I am not sure which of these item would be a true 73 rsr look. I need to know things like do you leave the dual battery tray in front and do you delete the latches front and rear and use those bungee things for latching the hood and decklid??. I will post pics so please keep me posted and help with this build. Thank tyou
Nathan

how perfect are you going to make it.....there are LOTS of details that can be done....if you just want the exterior appearance that is different...pics of the bumpers would help....you can do a search here and find tons of pics of real and repo RSRs.....

If you're going to get all the details right, you can't use Turbo flares, since the RSR flares were different. But if you're looking for the general look and feel (that's what I did), then these pictures from the 2004 Tour d' France might help:

Also check out the real (not restored) ones in this thread on the Early S Registry. Here are some samples from that thread.

And here's mine, which isn't a very accurate reproduction at all:

Jack,

What's the story on that first car in the set of "real" RSR's? No tail. Did some of them come with no rear tails? It almost looks like the red car a few pics below also is sans tail.

I like the tail-less look, which is why I like your car with the 964 electric wing. I was just wondering if any real ones came that way.

After looking at those pictures I think those two are ST's from '71 (the red one, 72 featured the S front bumper like Jack's). 9" flares front and rear and no cooler up front in the center.

The battery boxes were still there and only one battery was used.

The front hood latch was there and the rear wasn't.

The thing to remember about RSRs and early factory race cars is that there were variations and "evolutions"......so just shoot for what most of them seemed to have and it will look cool.

Besides as you can see by the pics that Jack posted.....most RSRs are not totally original anymore. They were race cars with many mods and changes over the years.......

Good luck with the project.

WOW WOW!!! Great pics,
I am not going to build this to spec, so turbo flares are fine. I want to get the bumpers and decklid right. Stickers and style. I will most likely put in a 3.0 and call it a day. Ill post pics
Thanks
Nathan

haha no kidding - you want pics, Jack has pics. Great reference thread for the RSR replica guys to work from!

I'm inspired now. Isn't the tricky bit getting the turbo front fenders/flares to match up with an early bumper though? What's the solution?

Can we have pics of the tub you're staring with Nathan?

Ok, I finally got some pics from my phone. Ill keep posting. Im hoping people can give me tasks I need to do on the car and ill do them. I want this to be the car we all build. I am having a new roof clip and rear seat pan welded in. Also the flares are not welded on as nice as I would liked so I will redo those.

This car had an amazing amount of bondo on these flares, after grinding it off I am thinking it was used to add shape to the flare. It came with some stupid fiberglass thing that houses a new center reflecter and sits between the bumper as you can see. I need a RSR rear bumper. Could someone explain to me what this tail is from. Do I need an RS tail??

THanks
Nathan

These are the seats that came with the car as well as all the interior, dash, carpet and extra 993 black seats.
Thanks
Nathan
