There is a sticker in my car, on the inside of the deck lid, that give the timing specs for my car. Yours may be different.

When I remove the vacuum hose, the idle rises, so then I have to adjust the idle back down to 900 to check timing. When I'm done and I reattach the vacuum hose, idle drops and I then have to increase the idle back to 900.

In the meantime, with idle at 900 and vacuum hose disconnected, timing should be at 5 degrees BTDC. Your car's spec may be different.
