911SC CV Joint Bolt Washers?
What type of washers should be used with 911SC six bolt CV joints with 8mm bolts
Schnoor washers? Wavey washers? Split washers? No washers? Thread lock (loctite) compound? Do the six bolt 100mm CVs use the spacer plates that span two bolts like the early 911 big(108mm) four bolt CVs that use the 10mm bolts? Thanks Eddie Last edited by eddie914; 10-08-2006 at 04:50 PM.. |

schnoor washers and new bolts. I then clean threads with brake cleaner and use locktite. I haven,t seen the locking plates used since the earlier 70s but you could use them if desired.

I have re-used bolts for years, tossing only those which are chewed up or otherwise visibly damaged. I have never used loctite in this application, but always use anti-seize.
Insofar as washers go, I use the stock schnorr washers, again I reuse any which look OK. Only thing I am religious about is replacing the CV joint gasket and then torquing the bolts down again about a week (100 km or so) after putting them in. The gasket apparently compresses which allows the bolts to work themselves loose. I also have never used the locking plates. Dennis

You will not obtain the correct bolt tension if you torque (using the specified torque values) with anti-seize compound on the threads. Also, you sure don't want to get the anti-seize compound on the flange mating faces or gaskets.

Jim, I suspect that you are right technically, but I have not had any problems with my CV joints at all. I have probably removed and replaced them a dozen times and there have been no problems.
I also admit I violate on of the rules on CV reconstruction....I mix up the balls and cages when I regrease them....just dump the whole mess (in one case, all 4 CVJ's) and then reassemble them at random. In terms of antisieze, I use it everywhere on everything. I know that specialty items like rod bolts and such you can't. And I agree, don't get it on the flange mating surfaces or gaskets...that would not be good. It is sure nice to come back to a bolt that I put in 10 years ago and get it loose without problems.... Dennis

For your casual bedtime reading.
Here is the classic (and definitive thread on this subject: Pelican rcecale, Randy’s classic thread. ”Reconstructing Constant Velocity (CV) Joints” Yes it is long but worth the effort. Hear are few more for reference. “CV Joints” CV joint disassembly ”Carrera CV Boot Replacement“ The following articles are a good reference for Lobro CV joints from Warren Hall: http://volksweb.relitech.com/cvjoints.htm http://www.type2.com/bartnik/cvjoints.htm CV joint disassembly Best, Grady Edit to get a link to work.
