Engine rebuild - first steps?

Hello everyone,

At long last, I'm about to start the rebuild of my 1973.5 911T engine (CIS).

I'll be getting onto the stand this week-end.

My first dumb question - what's the very first thing to do then?

I was thinking of cleaning it up - what product should I use for this, that is effective yet won't harm the magnesium?

Lots and lots of more questions to follow (no doubt) as the project continues...

How far are you going? The reason I ask if you tear it all the way down you may want to clean the individual pieces as you go. I beaad blasted alot of my parts, this is not the best thing to do you need to be real carefull that all the blast material is out of your pieces. I you can find some one with a walnut blaster that is the way to go.

I also have my engine out and on a stand. I am not attempting a rebuild at this time, but I am performing some general maintenance (replacing the leaky sending unit, seals, clutch, etc.). I would also like to clean up the engine while I have it out of the car. Is there an easy way to remove the entire CIS system as one piece? It seems that cleaning the shroud and several other areas would be much easier without the CIS in the way. I am just real hesitant to disassemble the whole system. Any suggestions?

Hope you have an air compressor on hand.
You guys are going to want to get the Fuel systems off your sixer, so you can get to the top of the jugs. Bob Anderson spoke of finding a rats nest under one!! Use compressed air-solvent degreaser until your satisfied...if your breaking it down, you still have a ways to go, but if you just tooling, then I'd also replace the oil seals on both the sending unit and the cooler, as they tend to have ruff lifestyle.
Do all the headstuds torque properly?
and most certainly...UPDATE TO HYDRAULIC TENSIONERS!!!!!!

I'd largely agree with Tlook.
My CIS stuff came off as a unit. This is what I recommend. Don't disassemble it any more than you have to.
You might want to replace the short rubber tubes between the air box and the intake runners.

I strongly recommend replacing the o-rings between the injectors and the fittings that hold the injectors in the intake runners. If the fittings are not the screw-in type, then there is another o-ring between the fitting and the intake runner. This particular o-ring probably looks like a hard plastic ring with a rectangular cross-section. In fact it should be a soft rubber o-ring with (of course) a round cross section. Replace 'em...you'll see what I mean.
