Body style conversion questions?????

Looking for some info/experiences on body style conversions (current '81SC):
- C-2 conversions, Yellowbird,RS
- 993 conversion
- reputable shops in the Northern Cal. area
- approx. costs
- issues to keep in mind
- pictures of your car
- any experiences with the advertised vendors in Excellence (ie. RS Design,BW Motorsports, etc)

I love my SC but I am curious about a more updated look...

Thanks in advance....

Check out RarelyL8's car in the post "911 GT look Pix" on 05-08-2000 for a very nice updated look that is more on the wilder side.

You will have to shop around there is just too many choices to narrow it all down. My only advice is that I am not a great fan of non-steel parts because the fit and finish is not always perfect.

You might want to figure out what you really want (looks wise). Then narrow down the companies that you are thinking about going with.. then ask for specific info on this board about them.

Expect to pay $$$$ to get it right.

I also had the same question. I have a 89 Targa, but I always loved the Turbos. Can anyone tell me what it'll cost to convert it to a Turbo look using steel parts??

For a Turbo Look conversion done properly steel flairs butt welded, doors, hood glass taken out figure $6000 for a cheap job up to $8500+.
Forget about fibreglass it will crack and separate from metal parts from body flex in less than a year

I disagree with the comment about fibreglass seperating from the steel. Although the steel arch extentions are preferable, glassfibre correctly applied will last for years. It is all about the method used to set the two materials together, and the provision of bracing to eliminate excess flexing wich will cause the paint to crack. I have employed glassfibre many times (either to shed weight,or to help someone on a restricted budget) to great effect and have had no problems. After all,if you use bondo to fill a dent without the correct preparation it too will fall out, but with the correct prep you will never know it is there. Chris.

Be a little dealing with RS Design. I ordered a fibreglss C2 center console from them and even though when i finally received it, it was outstanding quality work, i had major hassels getting them to ship it. They are really friendly people but not very business orientated. My unit was not shipped until 1 month after the promised shipping date and even then it was only because i threatened to have my credit card company reverse the charge. ( my card was debited on the day i placed the order).
Once again i would say that the unit i bought from them was quality workmanship, and that they are very nice people, but just not polished businessmen.
If you do buy from them make sure that they do not debit your card until they ship.
You may also want to check out these guys as they have a good rep http://www.fasttechmotorsports.com/frame2.htm
their kits are slightly more expensive but they have a reputation for a quality product.
I have never dealt with NR auto but they also have a large range of kits available their web site is http://www.nrauto.com/ go to the Porsche section and click on body kits.
I would also advise you to shop around for the light sets and expecially the seals and not necessarily buy them from the seller of the kit. A good example is the c2 front bumper smile the price can be anywhere between $100 and $200 depending on where you buy.
Also you will probably need to modify your exhaust system as the SC has the outlet on the left bumper corner whilst the C2 kit has it on the right hand side just under the tail light.

Good Luck

The "conversion" on my car is not really C2 but very similar. I wanted a more rounded and sexy style. The bumpers and GT-2 tail came from BWMotorsports. First class glass, very thick and fit was bolt on (drill your own holes). Only complaint was the time it took for delivery, about 6 months. The fenders, interior, and other stuff came from a salvaged 930 so all fenders are steel. Personally I am more comfortable using steel for the fenders from a durability standpoint. If the front or rear bumpers ever get damaged I'll just replace them.

Have you ever thought about just adding H4 headlights, Aero mirrors, '84 valance and chin spoiler, Carrera/turbo tail with a kewl little third brake light, lowering it a bit and maybe some 17" rims with a set of cross drilled rotors? That would rule!
If you wanted you could take it one step further and go with a wide body.
Hell, I think that would look cool.
The body kits are cool also, just too expensive and I'm not a fan of fiberglass spoilers, etc.
If you do go with fiberglass flares (I wouldn't) find a guy that can do it right...the problems mentioned above are most likely due to improper instalation.
Good luck,

P.S
Pazz...what does your C2 console look like?
I've seen pictures of 930 consoles...it that the same thing?

Yeah, I'd like to look into converting my 88 Carrera into a same year turbo body. Anyone know what it takes to get the wheels out the right way. Need new ones? Who makes a good steel kit to do this. Nothing else fancy, just a complete 930 conversion kit including wheels.

It is really not a wheel thing-more like a swing arm deal. The 930 arms just place the wheels out further then the 911's arms (they are wider and the brakes are mounted on the back). The reason that all these places are selling the wheel spacer kits are because the 930 arms will cost $$$ if you can find a set that some one will part with and it is cheaper to make a spacer.

I would not recommend (although no real reason other than preference) the use of front spacers (because of alignment issues). I just heard that somewhere-not a fact? Also I would use the type of spacers that the lugs go all the way through from the hub to the wheel (the factory uses this type ) rather than the type that bolts to the hub then your tire bolts to the adapter-Less to go wrong?

the C2 Console looks exactly like a real c2 conslole. It is a one piece unit that stretches from the area where your heater control is to in front of the gear shift.
it has a scooped out area for the handbrake.
I had it covered in leather and it looks great.
i no longer have the heater control or the fan switches that were on the old style console. instead i found a aircon control unit from a C2 and for $200 had a local air con electrician manufacture a circuit board and electronics so i could hook it ip to my standard Air con. It slots straight in the dash where the old heating control was.
Looks good & works well.

Another thing i did when I put on the aero mirriors, i wanted to retain the electric operation but i didnt want to fork out $120 for the wiring harness. So i bought a 6 way mirror switch from a 993 that fits into the
regular mirrior control slot on the door and controls both mirrors.
I paid $50 for the switch but my mechanic got it for me so i'm not sure whether it was new or 2nd hand.
As far as the exhaust goes i should be getting a new muffler in the next week or so. I could have just Modified my SC muffler but i wanted to get a little more HP so i explained my problem about the left vs right exhaust outlet to the Guys at Mille Miglia in Australia and they said no problem and are making a new system that will bolt right in ( at no extra charge).
To compliment the new exhaust i have a Cat bypass on the way from Fabspeed.

regards
Pazz

RarlyL8,

Great car! A couple of questions:

- where did you source the bumpers
- did you do the work yourself

Currently, my '81 911SC has a factory turbo tail, lowered, 17 inch fuchs, and H4s.

I would like to use a narrow body kit (including rockers). I like the style of your front bumper. I would also like to upgrade to "teardrop" mirrors. I will probably keep the tail.

Thanks again for the info ...guys

All the plastic parts and the mirrors came from BWMotorsports. A friend and I fitted the bumpers befor sending the car to the painter. The holes were drilled after painting to be certain that everything still lined up. A stock 965 smile was used on the front, no gasket was used on the rear (looks better). I used many different mechanics as consultants and assemblers for the different parts of the car (interior, engine, bodywork, paint, suspension, etc). This way I learned by doing things with experts on each system of the car. Everyone was very willing to help me and bail me out when I felt uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or just had no time to keep it going. I did have a few bad experiences - paint/body men - but that's to be expected.
