Nathan,

Hope you don't mind me answering emptyo's question on your thread.

I outsourced all the welding of the flares, they were butt-welded and contoured as much as possible to use very little filler. If I remember correctly it took about 16 - 20 hours to do all four corners. PM me if you need other details I'll be happy to answer them or pass any other tips... we probably shouldn't stray the original thread.

artisticent 10-20-2006 10:08 AM

Fernando,

You are very respectful, and thankyou for that. Emptyo is actually building the same project as myself. I would be happy if you would answer his questions here as your answers would also help me. I really think this thread is going to be great and I will post pics of all my updates. Hopefully I can get mine to the stage yours is at.
Thanks
Nathan

Nate and Fernando...I agree. Maybe we can make this the "Ultimate RSR" thread. :)

rennch 10-20-2006 10:16 AM

This is how mine sits at the moment...I'm in search of rear flares and front fenders, hopefully already flared. My wheels (Fikse 17 X 9 and 12) and bumpers are on their way.

Emptyo--your name is????

Fernando-I noticed the battery boxes were in till the last pics. Was it a late decision to remove them?? Also you have welded the gas tank and ant, is this for a fuel cell. Ill post pics, a lot of welding this weekend Fernando, give me the list of things to do.
Thanks
Nathan

rennch 10-20-2006 10:27 AM

Sorry Nathan, it's Mike. I'm in Boulder, CO.

artisticent 10-20-2006 10:37 AM

Iv noticed on my rear flares, the torsion tube holes have been welded and filled. I am not sure if I want this. Do I restore those holes??? Ok Fernando, there are some pics. What do I do now???

THanks
Nathan

Hey Mike,

Im not sure if I want the gas lid coming through the hood but I do like it out of the fender. Man oh man is Fernandos car awsome. Looks so easy. I love all the welding thats been done pre paint. Sway bar mounts, strut tower brace mounts etc.
Fernando--how did you get the mock up of these things so perfect. Did you own them before to mock them up??
Thanks
Nathan

SoCal70RSR 10-20-2006 12:17 PM

Hello guys,

Nice to see so many project in the works!

The flare installation and most of the welding was outsourced, at the time I didn't even own a welder, but now I do.... I was lucky to find two very knowleadgeable guys that we're willing to come to my house and do this stuff. One was a sheetmetal expert and the other was a rollbar guy with 17 years experience.

The battery box removal decision was done towards the end, I should've actually done it before the sandblast. Oh well... I definetely wanted them out before paint.

Nathan, there wasn't really much to mock up on the strut bar and the rollbar, the guy just knew his stuff. He made a few mock-up carboard pieces and a week or two later had the parts. For the sway bar mounts, we did have to have the sway bar on hand to test out placement.

There's no fuel cell, just the actual tank with the center filled mod.

As for the list of things to do, "cleaning" is probably the first, a power washer would come in handy, don't let any water stand, so a compressor would also help. I used POR-15 throughout the car and quiet-coat... the wurth stuff (undercoating) would probably be the best over the POR-15. Remove anything out of the car you don't plan on using, AC compressor, etc. this will make it easier to get around and work on the car. Hope I gave you guys some useful info, if I didn't cover something let me know.

Nathan,

I just realized I missed one of your questions... The rear torsion tube hole is needed to work on the rear torsion bar (remove/install). If you don't have to change the torsion bar or are going to coil-overs than you could leave it covered...

rennch 10-20-2006 12:38 PM

I would probably put those holes back, Nathan. Not only will it *look* right, you'll be hating life if you want to change your torsions after she's been painted.

My .02...

SoCal70RSR 10-20-2006 12:57 PM

Mike,

I just some some pics of your suspension, man that stuff looks SWEET! Have you installed the sway bars? How is that coming along?

rennch 10-20-2006 12:59 PM

I've installed the front sway, but I need to get aluminum trailing arms for the rear sway, so I have something to mount them on. I don't have rear sway bar mounts on my existing steel arms. I also have to weld up the mounts to the body as well. Soon, soon...

artisticent 10-20-2006 01:03 PM

I am leaning toward the coilovers but I think you are right Mike, I like the idea of the stock look. Putting them back will suck. but ill do it.

Fernando----I was always afraid to remove all the wiring, Gauges etc for fear of getting it all put back but I am such a believer in How good can a paint job really be when you are trying to avoid everything you left in.
I think for now ill get it as clean as humanly possible. I have a pressure washer and a compressor. I hope to not have it sand blasted for cost reasons but I would hate to cut 1 corner so early in the game.

List for the weekend.,,,,,,,,,,

Remove battery boxes
Clean inside and out
Remove everthing that can be removed (so scared)

Thanks
Nathan

Mike, here is an old thread on how we got around the lack of swaybar mounts for the 69-71, I imagine you'll have the same issue with your 69.

Wevo sway mount on a '70

Sometimes I wish I hadn't gone as far as I did on the wiring, I'm in the midst of installing everything back in. It's easy to take it out, but a lot more difficult to put back in.... where does this wire go? type of thing. I took many pictures and used a label maker to mark everything... it took a long time but it's paying off now. Also remember that you don't have to unplug all the gauges, push the rubber seal through and push the gauge into the trunk. I used blue painter's tape to wrap the gauges along with the wiring, the blue tape is great because it doesn't leave much glue residue. Good luck on this weekends projects.

rennch 10-20-2006 01:20 PM

Thanks Fernando. I didn't see where you used that spare piece of steel though...did you wrap it around the mount somehow? I'm not using the WEVO mounts...I'm using custom mounts made by Steve W. at Rennsport...I don't know if they'll have the same problem.

SoCal70RSR 10-20-2006 01:25 PM

Yeap... it was wrapped around the mount so we had a flush surface to weld. The 71 and older cars don't have the "groove" that these mounts were made for... there was some talk that wevo might make them, maybe your setup from Rennsport took this into a count already. You may want to double check to make sure.

JP911 10-20-2006 01:34 PM

Nathan-
Where in CA are you? If you're local, I'm willing to help out. I'd love to see this project come together first hand!

artisticent 10-20-2006 03:58 PM

Hi John,

Im on Overhill Rd just off of Camino Pablo Rd. No im just kidding. I cheated by looking you up on Google Earth. Unfortunately Im all the way 30 mins south of Ventura in a city named Moorpark. If you were closer I would have 3 squares for ya to help me with this. I had my girlfriend in the car today on a messy task. Well, if you are ever in the neighborhood, call me 818 203 7471.

Today I got a lot more sanding done, Removed the gas tank, everything from the smugglers, and like Fernando said I removed the gaskets from around the gauges and pushed them in. I am scared to unplug them.

Thanks
Guys.

Also Mike and Fernando, I am noticing you are specifying years for the sway mounts. Please keep in mind I have a 73 so Let me know what I need so I can start buying this stuff as I want the welding done soon.
Thanks
Nathan

Nathan,

Are you really planning on selling your rear wing? I'm building a '74 IROC and that's the period correct wing for mine. I'd be interested in purchasing or swapping.
