Unhappy Help my new 964 has engine trouble!!

I just picked up my new 1994 911 C2, this past thursday night.
My wife and I had to go to the coast this weekend for a baby shower.
So I decided to take my new car.
The trip was nice my wife really liked the seats, better even then her 2006 Audi.
Any way the trip is about 360 miles from Atlanta to the Gulf Coast.

About the last third of the trip(200 miles) I thought I hear a ticking from the back rear of the engine. It seem to sound like a valve tick.

When we got off the interstate the noise was louder, and really like a valve noise, with a erectic slap or rap every once in a while.
No lost power
The car never got hot, and the oil pressure was always good. The engine has 97k.
The avg speed of the trip was about 88 miles a hour.
So I changed the oil and put a new oil filter in just in chase it was bad oil .

No luck, there is still a loud valve noise with the a slap ever once in a while.

Please let me know what ya'll think, I have to drive back to Atlanta monday morning. I talked to the guy that sold it to me, (big Porsche Guy), he said that he thought I could drive it back to Atlanta safely.

i am just sick right now, Can it just be the valves out of adjustment?
Can I drive back , there are no real Porsche shops on the Gulf coast?

Derek,

I won’t offer an opinion on driving it with an increasing noise. I think you know better.

The noise can be from several causes.

First might be a valve adjusting screw loose. Not uncommon and easy for you to fix.

Second might be a rocker arm shaft having moved out of place. Again, not difficult for you to diagnose and repair.

After those are discounted, there needs to be some more serious diagnoses.

Best,
Grady

You are right Grady, Hell I built my old 72 , and now I am scared of taking anything apart on this 964 . I guess I should pull the valve covers on that side first, is that right?

Well I decided to get a rental car and drive back to Atlanta, leaving the car here on the Gulf Coast.
I will pick rent a trailer there and come back and pick it up with my truck.
The good news is I talked to the Guy I bought the car from, he said that he would take care of me and put the car in the shop, to find what is wrong. I think was really nice of him.

Thanks for the help I will keep ya'll posted.

Derek, sorry to hear about the problem with the new ride.

Nice to hear the PO is taking care of you though. Gives you a little more confidence.

Here's hoping it's not a broken head stud...

Broken Head stud, I did not even think of that. Can it be that too?
Tell me more, I didn't think these engines had this trouble.
Man I hope it is not that too.

It's not common, but it does happen. Too many short trips; hot/cold cycles can fatigue the head studs.

The reason we know less about those problems is that the engines are newer. It was a long time until the '96-98 993 CEL/SAI problem became well known.

The 964 engine is pretty darn good, but it's not bulletproof.

man that sucks, why would that make a ticking noise?
Also why would it make a slap or rap every once in a while?

Does the stud have a power lost? I am just sick about the whole thing!!!

The loss of sealing between the head and cylinder will create a leak that can sound like a 'tick.' It sometimes dounds different when the car is cold vs. hot and will get much louder under load.

Can't suggest any reason for the slap sound.

Update:

I trailered the car from the Gulf Coast to Atlanta. Droped it off and the P.O. was very sorry for the troubles, and said he whated to pay for trailer rental as well. He went on to say he would make it right @ no cost ot me. WOW.

He dropped it off next store @ the Porsche shop, and said he would let me know what they find.

Well I talked to him today, and it is not good.

It looks like the right side of the engine (heads and cams) lost oil pressure. .....Well you know what that will do. So now they have to go in and find the cause and fix the damage to the top of the engine on that side. I am thinking some of the rockers and the cam. SO I think he is going to pull the engine now so he can see what is involed.

I will keep ya'll posted

The P.O. said that he would make sure it was right, and he told the shop to make sure the repair is done right too.

Thanks for the help so far.

man you are going to have a brand new motor. Almost like hitting the lotery. I would prbably eat the trailer cost if it was me just to show .....allegiance to the marque....or something.

Man this sucks .....

At least your dealing with some great people who aren't leaving you hanging ( it sucks when the seller wont even pick up the phone to answer your phone calls,
evil caller ID ) Glad you dont have to deal with that.

Anyway I hop that no metal particles traveled anywhere else.... Does it look like the motor has been apart in the past?

Good luck
