Dan, thanks for the degreaser advice. It just happened that Harbor Freight just opened a Daytona Beach location.

I bought a few aluminum "roasting" pans at the grocery store. I'll use them for soaking the tin and other parts. A spray bottle will be employed to apply the degreaser to other parts and in the engine bay.

I still can't get the powder coating idea out of my mind. Has anyone powder coated their tin, fan and shroud? If so, how much would I need to budget?

Goat, I skimmed your thread. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Keep us posted.
(nice pic, too)

I just picked up all of my parts from the powder coater today, they degreased, balsted and painted the following for $300:

Fan - silver
Fan Shroud - silver
Engine tin - all of it
Engine cooling tin (stuff between the cylinders)
Front carrier that covers the main pulley
Front engine cross member
Four valve covers - Black

Was worth every penny to me the finish is better than the factory. You want to see some pics?

Glenn,

Here is a link to my project. I hope you have fun. Engine is done. Front bushings this winter.

I painted my engine bay with Duplicolor rattle can that looks just like the B.A.P.S. custom mix I got for a door ding.

first engine drop

Scott, please post pictures.

Lusso, I noticed in your thread that you "pressure washed". What did you pressure wash and what did you avoid. I've got a small pressure washer but am hesitant to use it for fear I'll force water where it should not go.

I power washed it with everything on. I also power washed it like it was in the second pic but with valve covers on and with the intakes and exhaust areas covered. I did pull the heads and cam towers for re-seal and rsr rocker seal upgrade.

There is another thread I saw a picture of someone power washing their engine.

In the engine bay I pulled all the electronics. Be careful I washed the throwout bearing on the pressure plate and had to replace it. I also tried to avoid distributor.
It runs better now than ever. If I were to do it over I would have split the case.

Hate to double post, however the max images are limited per post. I also just finished cleaning my engine case, it's in pieces for a complete rebuild and differs from your situation, however. I had my engine case jet blasted and coated by a local machine shop for $30.

They also did the chain housings and cam towers (cam towers were a complete loss so no need for a picture there.)

I hope in the end to not only have a new running 3.2L conversion, but I would also like to be able to eat off the engine.

Scott - the powder coat looks great. I may have to stretch the budget a bit and do something similar. But I'm going to separate the transmission from the engine and take a look at the clutch first. If I find anything wrong there, paint is going to have to come from a rattle can.

Here is a shot of some of the mess I'll be working on this weekend.

I'm curious about the clearance between the fan blade tips and shroud with the addition of the powder-coat. Have you checked to see if there is enough clearance?

The rest of it looks great.

Well, the transmission is off. The clutch release stuff looks like cr@p but I think it just needs a little TLC. TO bearing sounds really dry. I did not take the clutch off, maybe tomorrow. I've got a bad feeling though. There is a ton of dust and dirt in the bell housing.

Really I just was going to adjust the valves and clean it up a bit before sticking it back in. Dropping the engine may turn out to be a costly "just for fun."

SIGH....

Yes I installed the alternator and fan today to check that and it clears perfectly. I was worried as well and had the powder coat guy tape the blade ends just in case. In my mind there was probably just as much gunk buildup as there is paint now.

Daddy: I had among others the same leak as you have, and you will want to remove the red shroud and clean the oil from the cylinder cooling fins and the engine block top, here is what that oil leak looked like on mine with the cover removed:

I plan on dropping mine pretty soon here - she sprung a leak at the last autocross, I hope it's only the breather...

That powder coating looks great! But I think my budget (read: wife) will only allow for the rattle can as well. I hope not to get caught up in the "while i'm in there..."

Here is an idea. I painted all my tins and a couple of other parts with Rustoleum Industrial Paint. It was readily available at Home Depot and is very durable. 2 or 3 coats of that and I couldn't tell the difference from powder-coat. Here is a pic of those parts. Not the best pics but the only ones I have. One can should do all the tins and is only 6 bucks.

How long did the engine take to drop. I have a 1978 sc that I am going to start getting ready to drop to fix oil leaks and maybe change out gaskets and seals for the cis. This is my first porsche I have read all the books now it is time to take the plunge. Did you encounter anything that would be out of the norm that you could give me a heads up on?

I followed the directions in the Bentley manual. It took the better part of a day but I think I can do it much faster now that I've done it once.

Where are you in Florida? Perhaps we can find someone to give you a hand.
