Hmmmm... now you've got me thinking.

Could the pipe/tube have been just polished? I believe they told me it was stainless steel. My buddy who's got a bunch of experience welding did a great job. Below is a picture of the pipe and the welds. In fact, the over-flow receptacle you see is a cooking pot! It was so thin, it crackled all the way, but no leaks :)

I think it might be chromed mild steel.

try sticking a magnet on it - stainless has far less iron (thats why it doesn't corrode) in it and is much less magnetic. you can weld stainless to cold rolled steel.

I tried the magnet test and it stuck pretty well.

As you suspected, it's probably chromed mild steel. Thanks for the info in figuring this out. Anyone with plans to fab a center fill would be better served using average galvanized pipe instead of what I used. The tank was shot with line-x so you can't really see any of the chrome.

I looked at getting one of those "BBS wheel"wall clocks but they are damned hard to see the time!

You can weld SS to steel using stainless rod (wire). That's gonna be a beautiful car when your done Fernando!

Good Luck!

Hey Fernando.....Your car looks incredible! That is gonna be a screamin machine. Cant wait to see it when you are done. Maybe I could stop by and check it out sometime.

Jamie,

You'd be doing me a favor if you came by :) Your car is one of my favorites and would like to check out all your mods.

My front suspension is at Jae's (Mirage Intl) and I'm still not sure which way to go on the rear suspension. I'll PM you my phone number and we can hook up one of these weekends.

Wow ... I checked out the rest of your pictures ....makes my sympathetic restoration look very sad. Oh well maybe in a couple of years when I find more time. Very nice job! Very Nice!
