6280001 and up was the serial run for L series 911 SC produced between 8/77 and 7/78.

Second number is just a part number, probably for the case.

Welcome to the Forum.
You will find a lot of help here.

The Engine number 6281244 Decodes:
6 = 6 cylinder.
2 = 911SC-USA (Type 930/04, 3.0L, 180 hp).
8 = Model year 1978.
1244 = Sequential number.

930.101.104.4R
Is the casting number for the crankcase (not a type number or engine number).

The Type number can be found stamped vertically in the crankcase just to the right and forward of the horizontally stamped Engine number *6281244*.

Best,
Grady

So if the last 4 digits of my VIN are 1809 and the last 4 digits of my Engine are 1777, did my engine get replaced with an earlier one? There's only a 32 digit difference.

There is no correlation of engine serial numbers and VIN in Porsche production.
