Rainex Best Used Outdoors Only

Just wondering since some of you like Rainex - whether you've noticed the VERY potent fumes that emanate from the rag when using the product.

I had used the product some 15 years ago maybe 2 - 3 times total and it was interesting seeing the beeds of rain slide up the windshield. However, having attempted to use it around 4 years ago, I was shocked at how 'foul' the air became even if I held my breadth....at 10 feet away still felt nauseated by it. As Jay Leno joked a while ago, "...our hobby involves a lot of products that leaves some guys in marginal health. Hang out at car shows enough and you see it first hand."

Tell you the truth, I don't know, what the chemical ingredient is in Rainex. But my experience with it tells me that it is - FOUL - and incredibly overwhelming. Anyway, you're hearing this from a guy who enjoys getting grease in his fingernails and working on a car with all the funny smells here and there. But this is completely different.

The smell doesn't last long.

It smells like rubbing alcohol. I don't care for the smell, either. It is some good stuff, though.

I guess you never used anything stronger than Zymol Treat, such as Brakleen, B12 Chemtool, Swepco 201, Boeshield, Bel Ray chainlube, Super Lube with Teflon......

I hear you Rusnak, I have not used those items and thanks for the heads-up about them. I have a nose like a bloodhound - and it's a help and burden at times. For example, a single DROP of Rainex on a papertowel is offensive in my garage (door closed) a full hour later, and 20' away from towel. Can't do that with WD-40 or gearlube.

I seemed to agree with that 15 years ago. Now, it's by far - more repugnant than any rubbing alcohol for me.

Think about the fact that anything that can 'bond' or 'blend' it's molecules with GLASS is not gonna be easy to do. 'Science' and chemistry are needed for that task.

Consider also why any of us 'need' to use such a thing on our windscreens. For what ??? It's kinda slick to see it work, but it ends up leaving 'swirl marks' from the application that are noticed easily in cooler weather and at night. Guys are even using it to 'de-fog' the interior of glass. Again, it marks up the glass which is ugly. And regular dash (air) defrosters - seem to do the job.

Consider: A good set of wiper blades, a well lubed wiper motor - with good brushes - is wonderful also.

I'll disagree with you on the Rainex. I use it on all of my cars and swear by it. I can run at 70MPH in heavy rain without my wipers or just on intermittent settings.
I always use a clean cloth on the windows after two applications of it. I don't get the swirl marks that you mentioned since starting that process.
I also use my orbital buffer on the windows after waxing my cars.

I tried the inside, no-fog stuff but didn't find it to be much good. I don't smoke but the plastic still gives off vapors that will leave a film on the inside windows.
I'm mid of a freak about clean glass on my cars. Even if the paint is dirty, the windows will be clean.

Well, you can also do the same thing with the wiper system in my humble opinion. Like you, I want clean and spotless windscreens.
But we end up convincing ourselves that we can't do without these latest and greatest products.

Are you saying you don't see the 'swirl' marks at night in cool weather - or that the orbital sander polishes the glass after you've applied it ?

So, are we gonna argue about the product, the environment or personal health?

I'd have to agree with Leno, if that's what he said. Simple Green knocks me on my butt. When that genre of products first came out, there was some jerkoff standing on my porch after ringing the bell and telling me that I could clean my engine with it and then water it down and brush my teeth with it. I still use it on the engines. Never tried it on the teeth. And living in SoCal, I can say I've never used RainX.

Just the air I breathe courtesy of LA county is enough to make me worry not about the effects of car care products.

Rains here a bit...like 6 inches the last day or so.

Rainex will allow you to run with no wipers in hard rain if you'd care to. Done it a bunch in the 911s parked here. But I prefer not to drive in the rain. Sure it smells bad but then what doesn't with our cars?

But wife who actually has to drive in this muck everyday for an hr each way thinks Rainex is the "hot spit" for driver visability and she doesn't give a whit about 911s. I really like Rainex because I become the car god every time I reapply it to the windscreen of her BWM. Apply it correctly and I've found it works as advertised.

I don't mind the smell of Rainex. I do mind the smell of gear oil.

You need to work a day in a shop that is using seam sealer. It will make rain x smell like febreeze.

Milt, I guess #1 and #3 are my focus mostly...

I realize that proof with research are needed to speak as an authority - however, I'm trying my best to convince you to consider the viewpoint. And - that no matter how bad you think GearLube is to be around or that you don't suffer too much with Rainex, that you may not be registering what my developed nose is registering. And it is not 'mild' concern.

GearLube can be unpleasant to say the least - but it chemically does not ooze out the volatile vapors this product does. I suggest at a minimum that you buy a large fan if you're going to use it, and that way you'll be safe with it.. Outside of course. And practice holding your breadth for decent periods while you apply it. You don't have to follow my advice, but I strongly urge you (along w/ your sweetheart) to switch back to using the proper and original 'bosch wiper system' that works very well if given a chance. Then tell her how much 'you care about her'.

Btw, what happened to 'roadite' ? Someone involved with a restoration show was overheard saying it was his preferred choice for his old Bentley and 'how good a job it did' polishing the glass.

Maybe I don't notice the smell as much since I have a carport? Are there different formulations of Rainex? Mine is in a yellow bottle and smells like rubbing alcohol. Maybe I'm desensitized as I'm used to a medical environment.

I guess my nose isn't "developed".....

But I can smell the important stuff...like a slight anti freeze leak..(not important in the 911, but important in the 944S2), freshly cut grass, and when my girlfriend has just applied that coconut smelling stuff..(beach time.. )

Sounds like you've developed a sensitivity to it and can't take it anymore. This happened to me with Kilz brand interior primer. I used to work with the stuff extensively doing fire resto work about fifteen years ago. I can't even be around it now, it makes me feel very nauseous and irritates my lungs. I've noticed the RainX smell, too, but it doesn't bother me all that much.

I'll agree with the nose telling you that something is not to be inhaled on a prolonged basis. That's what it's for (amongst other things).
