How to open stuck closed '74 glove box?

umm...my stereo faceplate is in there..so no tunes. to add insult to injury, my truck was recently broken into and they stole the stereo. so no tunes in anything when i drive!

I dunno...but it sounds like the nut holding the locking assembly is loose on the back side.

Or, set it up with a velcro open & close? Maybe a mini version of the rubber hood tie downs like used on the 911R? A friends hot rod 911T "lightweight" used that trick...he'd removed the lock as unneeded weight.

Take the box portion of the glove box off from the backside of the panel. You'll see how it is held on (one steel strap) when you squeeze yourself upside down in there. Then you can see what is going on and fix that.

At least this will work for pre-964 bodied cars.

I was able to drill a 1/2 inch hole in the bottom of the glove box, (maybe 2 holes if you need a seperate hole for a small flashlight) and poke back the plastic retainer with a long screwdriver. Something made of white metal broke and I had to replace the lock tumbler assembly.

edit: magic word for 73's is "mousefur".....as in the fuzzy inside started in 72 I think

You were playing that jazzercise music again weren't you? The glove box is simply refusing to open it's mouth for another dose of that crap. Try waiving a Barry Manilow CD in front of the door. That ought to enduce a quick open and up-chuck. Then there's always more cowbell of course! LOL

If the credit card trick doesn't work, try fishing a length of monofilament in behind the latch, grab both ends and see if you can work it open that way. I have opened gas doors and console lids that way before.
