Diagnostics using Noises

I can't recall a thread specifically on using odd noises as diagnostics, so I'll start one...

Rattling from rear like chains being dragged over a metal garbage can -- engine chains/tensioner problem; STOP driving immediately

Small pops or clicks from front - near dash -- no problem; the metal is expanding or contracting rel to the glass in the instrument binnacles

Moan or howl from rear -- 1. kid in back is being burned alive because you removed the insulation near the firewall to save wt.; use earmuffs & continue driving
or
2. rear wheel bearings are about to blow up -- replace/repack

Rougher noise from rear than the moan or howl above - varies with speed -- CV joint problem; Limit driving and check immediately - loose CV joint will destroy the bottom of the car

Backfiring -- try to determine if it thru muffler or is out the intake -- {need to break this down by type of Inj. systems}
