Sorry to elbow in here but does anyone know where I can get one of those Gulf Oil stickers for my quarter window? I see them on period cars all the time but can't find anywhere to buy.

Thanks,

Scott

Original poster your color looks great, you made an excellent selection.
Since I was closely involved in the color selection for my son's car let me tell you this. If you are going for Gulf livery that is what you paint. It existed on Wyer racing team Gulf sponsored Ford GT40s in the mid 60s before Porsche contracted them to put their new 917s in the winning circle later on. It is not a powder blue. It is very light blue with a slight teal hue.

If you are copying what the Porsche marketing department picked up AFTER these successes, then changed into a medium intensity blue with violet hue use Porsche Gulf blue. Porsche Gulf blue was never popular, most consider it yuck and so do I. What's more it is so far from Wyer Gulf blue it just doesn't work when combined with their contrasting orange.

For those of you who want to know the orange. It's not the equally yuck Porsche powder orange, it's Chrysler first generation Hemi days Hugger Orange with the black removed. Look at the tail shot of my son’s car and tell me this isn't your recollection of Wyer Gulf Porsche 917s.

Condor-Man, your paint shop mixed your Porsche Gulf blue too deep and with excess violet. As reference go to the IROC group color photo in Paul Frere's Porsche 911 Story. None of these cars will match your shade of Porsche Gulf Blue.

Are you using a Commodore 64??

There is a very distinct differnce.

I'm on a $1000 monitor used for professional graphics and calibrated for extremely precise color reproduction ... and they barely look different to me. The greater concentration of orange on the right-hand car makes it impossible for your eye to make a proper distinction between the two blue hues. Plus, the lighting falls differently on each car so , again, you can't make a proper comparison using that photo.

I'm dying to see the hint of red in the original gulf blue. If anybody has any more pics that illustrate this, I'd love to see them. I, too was ignorant to the Gulf Blue RS shade vs. the earlier GT shade until recently. Thanks for the informative thread on this condor_man.

And not to forget the original poster -- your car is gorgeous!

it will be done by may, my lease is up on my factory and i'm moving the business so it has to be done along with my 911r project. at least that is what i'm telling myself! it is a little embarrassing that the rsr is not done - it is so close.

Out of the blue, the other blue... appreciate the (painful) details of how you arrived to your correct color choice! Blue gives more to deal with.

Have more pics of the difference...

Sorry, not intended. When this thread was resurrected I notice the pic was gone. It wouldn't allow editing so I did it this way.

I went back to today's posting and deleted the discussion.

So do we have paint numbers for the "Wyer racing Gulf team blue" & the "Chrysler first generation Hemi days Hugger Orange with the black removed?"

Also, the statement "with the black removed" I assume you speaking to the black being removed from the paint formula.. not the black border stripe being removed.

Wow, that orange seems really deep, almost red... Must be just the lighting, though, as the amber tail light lens seems kinda reddish, as well.
