Question about "subscribing"??

I have a question maybe someone can answer. I admit to NOT being an expert (at all) on internet bulliten boards and such (this is the only one I contribute to regularly). However, I have noticed a rash of posts lately where the only word in them is "subscribed". Is it just me or does anyone else not see the point of telling everyone you are going to watch the thread and be notified by email whenever someone else posts? I am not being critical at all, I just don't get it.

Back to our regular scheduled programming.....

Cheers

I've notice that recently, too, and I don't get it either.

It could be that they did not know that you can subscribe to a thread by scrolling to the bottom and clicking on the " Subscribe to this Thread " link.

PM= Private Message. You can find that at the "user cp" button right below the Free Shipping banner near the top of the page.

I think Ed meant that "you got a PM" is a redundant message.

I agree about the "Subscribing" posts, maybe they want to give it a bump combined with subscribing.

I don't understand the subscribing thing either, maybe it's to show support.

As for the "You have PM" thing, I see it in the Classifieds a lot, and I even do it in the Classifieds. My reason for doing it is to establish my place in line for something being sold.

My Swenglish interpretation has been that it basically means the author of the post finds the thread interesting and is planning on following it. Subscribing to the actual thread, as it where.

So here I am imposing to teach you how to interpret English!

The "You got PM" is a way to both bump a thread and notify the target of the message to check for the message. Sometimes folks don't have notifications turned on. It can also be a way to plant a stake in the ground if your trying to buy something and want to be first in line.

That's a part of it, the other part is, I'm interested in seeing where this thread goes, though I don't have anything to offer at the moment. At least this is my intention. I guess I'll start using the Subscribe Button.

didn't realize you could "subscribe" w/o replying. Now I know. The P.M. thing makes sense to me b/c people may not realize the received the private message.

For me it's about finding an interesting thread in which there either is or will be useful info that I want to keep up on. So every time a new post hits, I get an email. At some point I'll just bookmark it and unsubscribe and come back to when that project comes up.

It's about creating a personal knowledge base.

What is the correct way to suggest improvements to the forum, a mail to Wayne?
Apart from making the subscription link bigger and more visible I miss a better "Show Printable Version" function that could print an entire thread instead of page by page.

Like Shaun I get an email when someone replies to a thread that I have posted on. I save or delete them depending on if I am interested in the subject.

For instance almost anything with "backdating or 3.6 conversion" I keep as its good reverence material if needed in the future. Just a good way to keep info without doing a bookmark.

Did not know about the "Subscribe to the thread" icon so will try that out in the future.

One thing I'd like to see: the various other bulletin boards that I follow not only inform me with an e-mail when someone has responded to a thread to which I've subscribed, they send the actual response, so I don't have to take the time to log onto the buletin board itself. PP makes you log on in order to find out that somebody has responded, "Bump" or "Me too" or "1+." Waste of time.

possible explainations:
1) May be another form of internet based verbal diarrhea?
2) Some people just like seeing their name in print maybe?
3) You usually see people listing 'Subscribed' after a cool post!
4) Maybe you are not in with the 'in crowd' if you are unsubscribed?

What Steve said.

Other sights also allow you to choose a) respond, but not subscribe, b) get instant email response, c) daily summary email of responses, or d) weekly summary email
