How can you tell if it's a T-Look?
I just looked at an 84 Carrera yesterday w/63K miles & a sun roof. It had the flares, whale tail, ground effects. But when I asked the owner if it was a Turbo Look he said no but that car did come from the factory with the flares & everything else. I'm thinking he didn't know. How would I be able to tell? Thanks in advance.

If it had the Tubo 4-piston calipers all around, you can be fairly sure, and the VIN would be a good indicator, too. Of course, a PCNA Cardex report would verify the options, too!

Gonzo, from memory the 3.2 Carrera could be ordered from the beginning with the optional Turbo body/suspension/brakes but it was not until 1985 (August) that it became a regular factory model known as the 'Turbo-Look'. I think the only way you would be able to tell if the mods were factory supplied (apart from the quality of the workmanship) would be from the original Factory Specification Sheet (I think you refer to this as the Cardex in the US) available from Porsche themselves.

It wasn't called 'Turbo-Look' by the factory ... that was a press moniker, and they were available in '84! I saw one in a dealership showroom in June '84 in Kansas City!!! It had 8 x 16 and 9 x 16 Gold-metallic painted Fuchs and body, similar to the '80 Weisach SC special, 1" and 2" spacers for the wheels, and 205/55-16 and 245/45-16 Pirelli's on the Fuchs!!!

A genuine Turbo Look has turbo brakes AND suspension. So look after that. Also I think (I might be wrong due to bad memory so beware) that the Turbo Look package was called M430. So check the service manual too.

Sorry bad memory. Turbo Look is called M491.

I believe most Turbo look cars did not come with 930 calipers.

I own a 1986 Factory "Turbo-Look" and I have the original brochure which discusses the vehicle. First, the factory referred to the option group as the "Carrera Sport Package" and it is described as having "the same suspension, brake system, and wide body configuration with spoilers (7- and 9-inch forged alloy rims) and tires (205/55 VR 16 front, 245/45 VR 16 rear) as the 911 Turbo". One difference between the 1984 and 1986 "Turbo Look" is the flares. Up until 1986, the flares were welded on at the factroy, just as with the 930's since they were originally meant as a homologation vehicle. In 1986, all 930's and "Turbo Looks" have flares stamped as part of the fenders. Hope this helps you out. Oh, and the option group is M491, and if the car has not been repainted (like mine), there is a sticker on the underside of the front hood which states this (and other information) as well as in the original maintenance book. |
