Newbie Servicing Questions
I bring my 84 911 home saturday---she just had a major service done to her--69,000 miles--just what is involved with a "major service"---also how often must this be done?--i hear alot of so-called horror stories on engine rebuilds--is an engine rebuild inevitable and just how long can i run her before she starts devoloping problems? i know it boils down to how well you take care of the motor i.e. regular oil changes etc. what kind of regular maintenance schedule can i do to prolong the life of the motor without having a catastrophic repair bill?----sorry for my ignorance, but this is my first porsche and i want it to be a very enjoyable experience... thanks for the input

According to factory (many owners practice shorter intervals particularly if tracking/racing):
7500 miles: oil and oil filter. 15000 miles: oil and oil filter. check/adjust valves. 30000 miles: spark plugs (at least every two years). air filter. 60000 miles: gear oil. fuel filter. oxygen sensor (when applicable). every 24 months: brake fluid. There are of course several 'check points' besides the above.

I have 85 non-turbo. Oil change spec is 15K. I did 7.5K OCI until 120K, then switched to 3K all using 20W50 dino.
At 17K I got 1750 miles/qt. Now I get 1000 miles/qt at 175K miles. Porsche says 600 miles/qt typ. No internal engine work done. I would do 3500 mile changes if I had to do over. If turbo I would strongly consider synth but it's gonna cost ya. Edit: It did occur to me ... if using synth and longer drain interval maybe consider changing filter mid-interval. It's clean and easy operation Actually my main $$$ problems has been the 915 tranny. Unless you KNOW there is no synth in there replace fluid with Swepco 201. Your brass synchros will thank you. BTW, nice air dam. Last edited by glenncof; 02-08-2007 at 01:15 PM.. |

Follow the recommended maintenance intervals in the owner's manual and post your other questions on what to do with a 23 year old Porsche here.
For best results, you'll want to warm the oil up to operating temperature then wind up the tach to 5000+ rpm shifting second through fourth gears. Don't forget to smile. Regards,

I totally agree with Livi, (Markus Carrera '85) above. In fact, the only thing I do differently is change my oil every 3000 miles and always with Mobil 1 Syn in my '83 911SC.
Nice wheels! ![]()

Speaking of wheels, what sizes are you running? 7 and 8's by 16?
Just wondering. ![]()
