SWB vs LWB Interchange?

What are the differences between the Short Wheelbase cars and Long wheelbase cars? I have heard that the long wheelbase cars used longer trailing arms and the wheel openings were further back. How did this work with axle shaft geometry? Did the transmission and engine get moved back as well? Were the transmissions the same?
Thanks

Good question. Here are the details.

The differences are:

Trailing arms are different, mount to the torsion bar tube in a different location and have a dramatically different rear axle bearing configuration. This changed the axles, rear axle hub, stub axle and the bearing(s).

The parking brake is different,

The rear caliper mount spacing is different (SWB is same as 356).

The torsion bar spring plate is different.

The torsion bar tube in the chassis is different.

The axles are significantly longer and have much larger CV joints allowing greater angularity.

The transmission axle flanges are closer together (across the transmission) to allow for the longer axle.

The rear fenders are different (opening moved to the rear). An obvious difference here is the position of the torsion bar opening relative to the fender opening.

The rear quarter-bumpers are different (shorter on the sides to accommodate the different wheel opening.)

This is only the tip of the iceberg. Yes, this conversion can be done. No, it isn’t easy or inexpensive. Anyone is best advised to not make this change.

Best,
Grady
