newbie needing some help
i'm making the transition from the world of VW to to the world of Porsche. sorry for not posting pics but she is tired and dirty. my first problem is the throttle intermittently sticks, a finger pull on the throttle brings her back to a nice even idle. i need to know where to start a diagnosis. second problem is the door skins, i need a new pair, where to acquire? third problem, no horn. last little problem - for now- passenger's side front turn signal is cracked and the insides appear to need replacing, any good leads? by the way any reputable shops around atlantic city?
here's the car since you looked at it anyway 1973 911T New Jersey

Banned but not out, yet..

One place to start is to check all your throttle linkages for wear, dirt, crap. You may need to remove them, clean, and reinstall. But that would be too easy for a p-car. But at least its a start.

What Rick said. You can also go to a marine supply store and buy a spray can of a dry lube product that will help lube lots of things in general. Spray it in the ball socket of your accelerator pedal, bell crank & all of the places you can get to. There are also some plastic pieces that your metal rod goes through in the tunnel. You might check them out to see if they are causing binding. They break after so many years & can be replaced if necessary. Also you have a PM re: the door skins.

Chris, welcome to this great bunch of P car fruitcakes..
Throttle....3 spots to check..in order of ease I would start by jacking the car up (use a jack pad, if you don't have one order one here from Pelikan..it fits in the jackpad receiver holes on the sides of the car, then support the car with decent jackstands (Sams club has them for 45$) Look at the transaxle box and you will see a strange little arm that sticks out from the side and to which the throttle cable/rod attaches. This is exposed to lots of road junk and may need cleaning with a rag followed by a steady stream of brake cleaner follwed by a good dose of white lithium grease or better yet some moly grease. If that isn't it pull up the carpet by the pedals and undo the fasteners to your floorboard to look at the pedal assembly...look for goop, binding etc. It may need rebuilding butt probably not. The last and perhaps most difficult (depends on if you have carbs or CIS is the linkage in the engine. Try the first two and post here with details if the first two do not work.

What kind of induction? '73 T's started with MFI very early in the run and wound up with CIS on the majority of them. Different things can be sticky depending on which it is.
Common to both is the bell crank on the left side of the tranny, and the throttle rod (more like a heavy wire) that goes between it and the throttle on the CIS or the MFI pump. The bell crank can bind after it gets all dirty or the rod can rub on the hole in the tin through which it passes into the engine compartment. The throttle rod from the pedal to that bell crank can also drag in its bushings. It runs through the tunnel down the center of the car. All of that stuff can get gummed up and dirty, as old as these cars are, so it pays to clean it all up and replace any worns bushings and whatnot. You can get all of the parts you are asking about from our host. Many of them can be found on this BBS's "used parts for sale and wanted" section as well.

thanks for the responses. so it's really not that different than a ghia. find the problem and smooth it out. look in one of four places, if not - i have a bigger problem.
no carbs, she has MFI on a rebuilt engine. the door skins are an issue that needs to be addressed. the horn and turn signal are requirements for inspection. i plan to drive her, not a DD, but she needs some attention. ![]()

i do have one more thing to add, chris, my man , you are awesome. i'll keep the ghia and pass her along to a kindred spirit in 25 years.
once again, thanks for your time.

are you suggesting a whole door would be a better idea?
i may need a window regulator for the driver's side, but i figured i could fix that as i'm shooting for fixing the clock next week.

unless you are a skillful bodyman I would suggest a complete door assembly....I am not sure Porsche ever offered just the outer skin...but judging from the amount of rust in the photos, the framework is most likely shot anyway.....save yourself a lot of headaches and get the entire door.

the throttle was fixed with some WD-40 and a toothbrush, everywhere the rod had a penetration or a connection. marine supplies around me are closed until March.
as far as the color, i don't know if i'm man enough for purple. edit, i have minimal body skills as evidenced:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=8&st=1780# bottom of the page
