How do you test the Cold Start Valve

'74 2.7 CIS:

My car runs very well warm, but starting has some issues.

Cold: Car starts with throttle lever up & will run with lever down after about 2-3 minutes.

Warm: Car runs well but after turning off engine for just a minute (like at a gas station), the car starts and behaves like it is flooded. It sputters for about a minute and will die with out foot on gas or throttle lever up.

Just replaced accumulator. Have not replaced check valve but during the accumulator replacement, I noticed that the fuel line was pressurized - this makes me assume the check valve is ok.

It's hard to describe how the engine runs while starting warm....but here goes. Putt..........putt........putt.......putt....putt. ...putt....putt...putt...putt..putt.putt.putt.putt .putt.putt.pitt.vroom.

So, how would I check the cold start valve & do these symptoms sound like CSV issues? My guess is that it's working but not stopping and therefore too rich at warm startup.

Other Recent Tuneup Items 01/2012:
all new vacum lines, injector seals, injector sleeves, manifold gaskets, manifold o gaskets, plug wires, plugs, cap, rotor, valves adjusted, fuel filter.

Any advice would be appreciated.......Vern

I don't think your car would start at all without CSI.

But I'll answer in case you want to test it/back flush it.

I used a battery that was at about 11 volts as I did not want to over heat its internal windings. Hook it up and heard it click. Then I reverse flush it with compressed air and injector cleaner mix.

You can then check spray pattern by energizing it when you have supply side under pressure.

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

disconnect the plug (thus deactivating the CSV) and see if the problem goes away.

(but from what you describe, I don't think the CSV is your problem)

Yes, I have the CIS test gauges. I haven't tested pressures yet but maybe this weekend, I will get to it.
