Central lock problem on Carrera

Car is '85 Carrera with central locking. Used to work perfectly but lately it doesn't seem to want to stay locked. From outside the car, turn the key to lock and after about 1 second it pops back to unlocked. This happens a bunch of times but eventually it takes. Any ideas what could be the fault?

You haven't been nice enough to your 911. Therefore it has grown tired of you and tries to be stolen by unlocking the doors after you leave it. Hopefully it will find a caring new owner.

I'm afraid I have no idea what might be wrong. But it's situations like these that make you feel like your car is alive.

I am not familiar with the system for P cars.

If it is a vacuum-type, then you most likely have an air leak.

No it's electric. I believe there is a computer involved also, under the dash. I am wondering if this is a typical problem with a common fix or if it will require troubleshooting.

I have an '85 too. I have seen mine do this when one of the doors are not closed all the way. Check your doors for proper closing and door clasp alignment thingy (whatever its called).

The power door lock electrics are a small electric black box mounted on the passenger fender way up inside the trunk to where you can barely get your hand in near the antenna wires (if you have the integrated windshield and antenna). The soldering connection on my black box came apart. That's why I know.
I locked and unlocked my doors until I found mine. Email me if you want more info...

I have a central locking unit in my 87 Carrera that used to do the same thing,the problem with mine was the relay in the control unit was not holding in.
The relay is very easy to replace but the control unit is hard to get to.

I had the same problem in my 87, you will have to remove the inside door panel and replace the plastic push-rod. I had to get
it through a dealer, cost about $7.50 Good Luck

Wondering if you have fixed your problem. I had a similar problem, which was recently solved.

I have an 88 and it started doing this when I locked the passenger side door but not the driver’s door.

Eventually it broke and I got the “opportunity” to figure out what was wrong. There is a screw in the back of the lock that both holds the lock in place and has a lever to unlock the door. The door is actually locked electronically not mechanically. There is a microswitch in attached to the lock that senses the position of the lock. The microswitch actually can unlock the door as well and therein was my problem.

On my car, the screw in the back came loose and the lock would turn 180 degrees and free the key. The doors would lock, I would take out the key and a second or so later the doors would unlock! Put the key back in, turn another 180 and the doors would stay unlocked. Use the normal motion, 90 degrees and back, the car would lock and stay locked.

Had I noticed what I was doing with the key, taken the door apart and used some loc-tight on the screw that would have been the extent of the repair.

I waited. One day I was locking the car and as I turned the key I heard the sound of parts falling into the door. When I took the key out, the lock came with the key! At this point, all it took to unlock the car was a pencil reaching in a pressing the mircoswitch. I took the door and door handle apart to figure out how it worked and what to do to fix it. A call to Wayne and his crew later the locks have worked fine ever since.

What's the whole point of central locking? The car's got 2 doors.

Just walk over on the other side and lock the door, takes 2 seconds. geeez...

Now with 4 or 5 doors, that makes more sense.

Have you noticed that, when locked, the central lock light (red) is incredibly bright when driving?

On my 88 carrera im too having a cental lock fiesta,you can lock the doors but they will go up and down 3 times before they will lock,same from the inside i replace the microswitch on the passanger side which i belives is the root of the problem but still the problem persists,any ideas?

Yes, that central locking light is quite bright, and really annoying at night. I leave the doors unlocked, just so I don't have to look at it.

You'd think it would be brighter with the doors unlocked, and then dim when they are locked. I'll never understand Germans
