Dan - I'll be ordering the parts today.
Not much will be happening until they arrive.

Besides, I have to get some job related work done this week.

Hopefully, someone can chime in and tell you how to properly assess 'the damage'.

Either way, post here when the parts arrive. If I'm in town and the girls will let me hang out with the guys (my daughter more than my wife - she understands!), I'll gladly help where I can.

Later,
Mike

$938+ for the Wevo fix, plus the cost of synchros and sliders to replace my bad items... well, that is not an option.
I finally got around to removing the race and found that the pocket does show signs that the race has been rotating. Not bad, as there is no galling of metal - just some polished areas.

edit: fixed.

Okay... I would love to set up the CWP properly, but considering my lack of access to tool P258 / P258a to measure the pinion mounting depth properly, is it acceptable to just install the same number and thickness of shims that the trans had in it when disassembled?

I know this assumes that the last mechanic set it up properly...

Cash Flyer,

If you have bonded the output shaft bearing race into the same housing you had originally, and there was no rear end noise prior to this repair, and there isn't evidence of excessive wear on the R&P gears you should be fine to use the same shim thickness again. In my case I had to exchange the final drive housing. Definitley a big concern here as far as setting up pinion depth and backlash. See my (as yet unproven) alternate measurement method here . I'm preparing to put the motor and tranny back in about 3 weeks. I'll be holding my breath to see if I've got the diff set up properly. If it whines, I'll whine!

Wow, dentist... Thanks.

That led me to a morning of thread hopping that covered everything from carrier preload, backlash, and the pinion depth (including some nice tools that I want to procure or produce).

I'll reassemble with the same thickness of shims as it had before and hope for the best.

But now I have to get back to work.

I don't think there was much interest in this thread, but I'll close it out by saying that the trans is all back together now.

re: Do We Really Need Another 915 Rebuild Thread?

Probably just bad timing, as there have been many other pressing Porsche issues to deal with lately. Fir instance your 'favourite colour of 911' has not been thoroughly explored yet, the perennial "show me your..." threads are not complete and many owners haven't yet been directed to ALL the ugly 911s for sale on e-Bay at this time.
When some brave, geographically isolated soul decides that they need help rebuilding their 915 tranny for the first time they will be rewarded with the standard "do a search" response so those more experienced in these repairs can continue their exhaustive investigation of the best wheels for their car.
Maybe somewhere between the engine rebuilding forum and the technical forum there should be a "dirty-fingernailed, desperate weekend mechanic who can't find it in the Bentley manual" forum.

PS: Do a search... maybe you'll find lots of info on this!

I don't have a Bentley manual, but I do have a copy of the factory workshop manual. Still, I would say the most helpful info was this thread by "rcecale": LINK

Others may like THIS THREAD however it is devoid of any photos - and I really like seeing pictures that show what the text is describing.

This project was not nearly as difficult as I had thought it would be, and I had very few parts left over.
