Thanks for all the help, a rebuilt starter did the trick! Now I'm having trouble with my carburetors...see this thread:

Starter Whirs, but nothing

I have a similar problem, and I've been advised by another forum to remove the starter, use penetrating oil to clean and lubricate the Benix and then use TEFLON Multi-Use Spray Lubricant all around the shaft area allowing the gear to fully move forward to engage the flywheel.

Will be trying that shortly.
