Fan Noise Help

For some reason, PO had rotated fan housing 60 degrees counter clockwise. I corrected it during my valve adjust and installed a new fan belt.

Based on other weird issues with the car (PO's doing), I was not too surprised to discover there were only 3 shims on the fan pulley. I've ordered more from our host to replace the missing 3.

I reinstalled with the 3 existing shims in the same position they were previously, however now there is a noise that sounds like a bearing going bad from the fan area. Would the lack of the 3 shims (coupled with a new belt) cause this type of noise?

There was never any noise previous to my rotating the housing, and the fan spun freely and noiselessly prior to installing the belt.

For all of you who helped me through my first valve adjust, I can't thank you enough. Car started fine, and valve ticking that was there before is gone.

Ummm, I think the best may be too tight. It's beter to err on the side of being loose than tight, but make sure it doesn't flap around at all. And check it a couple of times over the next hour or two of running as it's bound to need adjusting.

From your description it sounds like the belt is too tight. Being that it is a new belt it makes sense, they are not stretched as the old one was. There is too much tension on the bearings hence the noise.

I say add 1 shim at a time and see what happens.
