Where else to find a VIN?

I came across a believed 73 911 that will be for sale in the next couple of weeks and I looked in the door jam and under the hood and can't find a VIN on the car at all. The car has 930 flares from and rear and looks like a mid-late 80s 930 guards red cabriolet. I am curious as to the actual year on the car and what it might be worth. It does have 19" wheels on the car and low profile tires. The paint looks good as well. Any thoughts?

If it doesn't have a VIN stamped in the sheet metal at 10:00 from the gas tank under the trunk you might as well fagedaboudit.

If it is a ’73 there will be the chassis VIN in the trunk. Lift the carpet, the number is stamped in the sheet metal just behind the fuel tank and to the left as you are facing in the trunk.

There should be an aluminum plate on the trunk latch threshold, again to the left of center as you are facing the trunk.

A ’73 should have a public VIN riveted to the driver’s side windshield post.

You indicate the door jamb VIN decal is missing.

If all else fails, there is a number stamped in the dash behind the right knee piece. That number PCNA (or any police) can tie to the VIN. To get to this number it takes a wobbly 8 mm, ¼” drive socket and an 8” extension.

If any of the numbers appear to be tampered with, back off.

Ask to see the title. It should show a previous title. You can research that with the appropriate DMV.

Most jurisdictions will have an officer do a physical inspection of an auto VIN on site for free. Most (all?) states have experts in this field. Forget the FBI. Last year I found an obviously interstate and international issue ($100K car) and they were “too busy” with terrorists – like looking up your personal information it now seems.

Best,
Grady

Just to add a little. This is only if US delivery I believe.

If ROW, it won't have that tag but, could have a variety of other funky tags for other country regs. If it was ROW and then Federalized I'm not sure what would have been installed.
