Turn Signal/Flasher Relay

Here I go again. Just trying to fix the problem with my side markers not illuminating with the turn signal or flashers on. I'll already trouble shot all of the usual wiring when I did a head light wiring harness repair. That is when I noticed this problem, but I never pulled the Relay to check it out.

Well this is what I found:

Deffinately not the OEM turn signal/flasher relay. Its nice to have three of four pins as well.

Here is the relay's socket (upper right):

That fourth pin recepticle looks like it hasn't been used for a very long time.

I've got 914-618-303-11-M44 (the correct relay for my period car, yes I also saw the 914 vice 911) on order from our host. Hopefully the correct relay will take care of this problem and the a PO (or their mechanic) didn't mess with the wiring anymore to try and make this VW/Audi part work.

Just thought I'd share this with you guys.

Moral of the story check your relay before going into your turn signal housings.

According to the Bentley the 4th pin goes to a trailer turn signal inidcator lamp.

I kind of remember my 88 has the VW relay, but not sure.

Are you sure the side marker lights are supposed to flash with the turn signals?

To the best of my knowledge, they are supposed to light up with the turn signals and flashers. We had a discussion about it, around four months ago.

At least I'll be replacing it with the proper relay. I'll let everyone know if there is or is not a change in the operation of side markers when the flashers or turn signals are on.

I had a three pin that worked fine. Problem was the wrong bulbs. To low current draw.

Isn't the relay in a brilliant location? WTF were they thinking?

PBH,

I agree with you about the relay. Much more painful than it should be to remove and install.

My side markers work fine with the running lights on. Though with the lights on, they still go out when the turn signal is activated or the flashers. The only thing I can think could cause that is the relay.

How can something that meets the Department of Transportation and some inactive Society of Automotive Engineers specifications be bad?

"Isn't the relay in a brilliant location? WTF were they thinking?"

I wish I knew who did the electrical design on these cars. I'd put him together with the moron who designed my house and kill them both slowly.
