CV joint question
I asked this in the Turbo forum but not a lot of activity there so maybe someone here has the answer..
After seeing the condition of one CV I decided to replace all of them and rehab the axle shafts. In doing so I lost track of which way the shafts go on and see no mention of it anywhere. On one side of each shaft there is a raised "rib" (shown circled in the picture attached). Does it go toward the tranny or wheel (or does it matter as long as both are the same?)? Also, is there an "inside" or "outside" on the new CV joints? I see no indication they go a certain way but wanted to ask before I assemble/grease them.. Thanks!

Gary,
Very good question. It may just be an artifact of the axle manufacturing process. Does it look like that is a place where the shaft was clamped when upsetting the other features? There is another CV joint question. Another Pelican noticed an asymmetry to the joint cage. That needs to be resolved if it has some functionality or is an artifact. Best, Grady

Hi Grady -
Actually it is an intentional and very noticeable rib on both axles that seems to me was machined in for some purpose. I'll run it by my shop tomorrow along with the CV asymmetry query...
