Need Help Installing Wiper/Motor Assembly
Through this board, I diagnosed my disconnected and thought to be inop wiper motor. I got it sorted out and wired correctly and tested it before I mounted it in the car. Within a few short revolutions the wiper shafts (with the nuts) tighted themselves up on either side of the tubes (on the mount) through which they go. Probably clear as mud, right?
Anyway, I figured that this tube area needs to have play between the two nuts on either side (one nut seems to be permanently fixed to the farthest "in" end of the wiper shaft. So I decided to tighten the nuts on either side of the cowl and rubber grommets nice and tight - this would give the shafts enough play to go back and forth without tightening against the tube. Wrong. ![]() ![]()

Scott,
I am not sure if this will apply, but a few years back, while on a trip, the wipers quit on my 73. Blew a fuse, I smelled smoke and everything! I went ahead and ordered a new (used) motor from Partsheaven , and when it arrived I dissassembeled the front mess that you have to get through, then removed the entire assembly. What I discovered was that the two bushing areas where the wiper shafts feed thru to the outside world were completely bound up solid with congealed grease, water, dirt, sand, and whatever else found it's way in there in 30+ years of use. Once I cleaned and re lubed those shaft / bushes, the whole unit sprang to life like a new penny, and has been working fine ever since. Hope this A. Makes some sense to you re: your problem, and B. Can help you fix your wipers... ![]()

Thanks Bill. I have already removed and restored the wiper system and lubed properly with LPS. What happens is that the threaded wiper shaft somehow self tightens the nuts against either side of the tubing through which the shaft goes (part of the motor mount bracket). There has to be a trick to the mounting that I am missing - something simple.
Need help from all you guys who have restored these cars!
