muffler and cars and coffee and Keystone

Muffler is just fine. I'm glad I didn't plan on a radio....never would've heard it. I will however be able to listen for the six-way harmony of the RS engine. I lied, the muffler is a little raspy...but that was the plan.

I changed the oil and filter, tightened some oil lines and fixed a couple small leaks today . Yeah there was some ( 14 mile break-in) metal on the magnets. I also decided to revamp the fuel return system. I blocked off the Bosch fuel pump return line and ran the return from the engine compartment directly back to the tank...pressure came down...finally. I inadvertently connected the shift coupler so that I could only grab 1-2-3...when I installed the engine and trannie. However, now I have use of all 5 forward gears. I have a punch list of items to "tweak". Cars and coffee looks good for Saturday...still need to get temp tags to get emissioned. Love the folks at the DMV

Keystone is a go. I won't be showing, just enjoying. I have decided that as nice as my stock Recaros are...horse hair gets downright "crunchy" after 43 years. Some repro seats are in my future. I might help with the rally or a tour. Need to get the carbs "middled" for the altitude. Boulder is at 5,000 ft...I live at 8,000 and Keystone is at 10,000 ft. You guys on the coasts don't have this issue.

I am going to create a period -correct spare tomorrow on a deep six, and assemble an efficient "modern" tool kit for the car for trips. I also need to get the car aligned and corner balanced. The 22mm and 28 mm t-bars are just what the doctor ordered.

Road trip this morning....sort of...

Pucker factor time. I washed the car and loaded up some tools. Furthest the car has been from the house before was about three miles. Cars and coffee in Lafayette Colorado beckoned...about 30 miles both ways. I had promised some friends I would make it, and I seemed to have "exorcised" my fuel pump gremlins. No guts, no glory
So headed out at 7:30 and gassed up in town on the way. Aside from the idle being a little too high once the engine warms up, and a sloppy alignment, car drove fine. A little rich running at lower altitudes, but I didn't mind the little backfires at the intersections. Nice thing about the E cams is how it pulls through the rpm range. Most fun gears without question are 3rd and 4th. I forgot to take pictures at cars and coffee...lots of cool cars...someone else will I am sure. I had a little more confidence coming home, and ran the rpms up to 5000, just inching them higher.
I pulled off at my favorite lookout near home...any car would look good at this place.

Thank god the rain has stopped...this is what the weather is supposed to be like in the mountains.

No issues? Nothing? It just "works"?

Damn. That's as impressive as building the thing.

2.7 engine...numbers

Luke,
I was conservative when I built the engine. I didn't want a race engine so I gave it some leeway on deck height. Once I get it leaned for emissions, I'll go back and tweak the carbs. The engine is a stock 2.7 RS spec, 8.5-1, E cams, 40 IDAs. I am guessing 175-190 hp...nowhere near your 3.2 with the chip. But, the R is light...I'm going to guess 2000 lbs wet. The rear was too low for me to get it corner balanced, and I had already maxed out the adjustment on the spring plates. So today after work I spent a couple hours and "neutralized the spring plates" and re-indexed the t-bars to gain an inch in the rear. Looks a lot better. I don't look forward EVER to indexing t-bars, but it went very smoothly and is all back together.

I would rate this as the best build thread on Pelican. Congratulations on completing a great project.

Hi speedo I have a 67 912 I just indexed the swing plates would you mind letting use know what degree you set them at. The book calls for 36 degrees I set mine at 30 degrees. Would like to compare.
thanks Jerry

Jerry,

I believe (IIRC) that Speedo used 28mm rear torsion bars. Unless you have the same, the installed angle may not be too helpful to you.

Got it corner balanced today

If anybody wants a very fair price on a top notch alignment and corner balancing in Boulder, PM me....I have a great referral. The alignment apparently was very easy and the numbers came out almost exactly balanced left -right...within a couple pounds. Front to rear is exactly 35% front, 65% rear. That will change marginally when I get my spacesaver mounted and installed.

The better news...1957 lbs of fun including a half tank of gas. That will go down when I swap out the horsehair seat for some race buckets. I had negative rake when I started, the rear has come up 3/4s of an inch....so now I have a slight positive rake. Car drives great...tried to get the SWB rear end loose coming home...no luck. I need to find a parking lot. Raining now (what a surprise) pictures on ride height tomorrow.

Jerry, sent you a detailed PM on ride height.

Speedo
