Wow!!
What an amazing thread. I just got my first project Porsche 911. Its a 911T. Found it here in a storage place in Parker Colorado. Speedo, I would like to buy you a coffee sometime and get your advice on my project here. I have quite a bit LESS work to do to mine, but I would love to hear anything you have to say. Your story was very inspiring!
Please let me know when the next Porsche get together is. I will be there! ![]() ![]() |

I have been underground....
Took the beast up to Keystone, not to display, but drive it. Engine is slightly lean at 5000 ft ( needed to get it passed emissions...done), but at 10,000 ft it was running a little rich and loved it. Lots of tweaks after firing it up... leaking input shaft seal, so I did a partial drop and replaced the trannie seal and popped the engine back in. I sorted a few other items out which I will detail later. Big news is seats...As much as I love sitting on 43 year old seats...I ordered some new ST seats which will go in this weekend. Old recaros are now for sale with headrests included. I have about 400 miles on the car and am getting ready for the 500 oil change and valve adjust.

Lars - just taken a rather *coughs* long lunch hour to read the thread from the beginning. Thanks for taking the time and effort to post in such detail...a real inspiration to my R recreation currently in progress

input shaft seal repair...$1.75
This trannie was acquired for the car...and the desireable ratios AFMSX. After topping it off with swepco and installing it...I was getting drops of trannie fluid on the floor. I looked everywhere hoping for an overflowspitting, or a loose side cover bolt. Nope, looked to be coming from inside the bellhousing. Must be the input shaft seal. Cheap, but you have to drop the engine and trannie to do it. I have a way to partially drop the package and separate the engine from the trannie...much faster.
The drop ![]() Houston we have separation ![]() The problem area...swepco mixed with assembly lube I needed a tool to remove the seal...hmm a spare flathead ![]() Becomes the seal removal tool ![]() Works perfectly. New seal ![]() And tapped into place ![]() Fork and throwout bearing back in place ![]() And ready to un-partial-drop ![]() Back in the car...no leaks and it only cost $1.75 ![]() Last edited by speedo; 07-12-2009 at 03:55 PM.. |

centercaps or not
The wheels were installed without centercaps. Al Reed did the work on the rear 7x15s and the fronts are deep sixes in nice shape. I have never been a fan of centercaps, but I have always "blacked out" my trim too. As the car has quite a bit more "bling " to it than my other cars, I decided to try to polish up some center caps. The fronts will be three prong and the rears will be the later caps. They all start with annodization removal.
The rears look like this... ![]() Easy off for 15 minutes...clean it off with thinner and polish. I converted an old bench grinder to a polishing wheel for polishing the window trim...so it gets called back into duty for the centercaps. Only problem is the heat build up in the aluminum...wear leather gloves. ![]() Next... ![]() ![]() And installed, I like them. I know it doesn't cost much to get them polished, but It's nice to take the old stock and renew it. ![]() |

The e-brake needs something...
The new billet knob looks lonesome with no handle. The plastic handle is long gone and I don't want to try to find a decent 43 year old handle.
![]() I had some leather left over from the momo steering wheel re-cover. I cut a piece off the spare leather ![]() Shaped ![]() Punched to sew ![]() Made a buck to stitch for shape ![]() Stitched ![]() And installed ![]() Yeah, this works! |

The ST seats came...well repros
So the stock recaros...which look great now come out.
![]() The new buckets ![]() Sliders and brackets installed on drivers side ![]() ![]() And installed vs the stock recaro in the passenger seat ![]() ![]() Driver gets slider and passenger gets a tilting bracket ![]() Had some issues with fitment of the tilting bracket that required a bit of re-engineering...but it worked out fine. Both installed. ![]() ![]() Seats are done. Stock early recaros are for sale and will get posted. Last edited by speedo; 07-12-2009 at 05:56 AM.. |

The seats made a HUGE difference! Looking good. How long does it take to remove the motor your way vs removing it with the tranny?

Add me to that as well, if you wouldn't mind. I have to swap that seal as well.

I probably don't have good taste, but I think I liked the recaros a tiny bit better. I think they fit really well. The buckets look AMAZING though and will probably get even better with age. I'm sure they support 'spirited' driving a bit better too.
Amazing car. My hat's off to you.
