my 80 sc will not fire

I had just returned from running my 80 sc after being in storage for the winter, and after stopping in my driveway, and checking for any oil leaKS, I tried to restarrt the engine and it will not fire. I am not getting the normal whirring sound from the engine compartment, but the starter turns the engine over quite well. I have checked the red relay, and other fuses, but still nothing. Could the Bosch CDI have failed that quickly? I don't know if the coil is any good, but I did check the distributor, and found no cracks or apparrent scoring. What is next?

I pulled the #1 plug, and I am getting a good spark when the engine turtns over. I don't smell any gas, but the plug does look a little wet.

chas. with the ignition on. and the air cover and filter removed. lift the air sensor bar. you should hear the injectors "scream". if not, no fuel. just do it alittle bit for a short duration. you dont want to flood anything.

I will give that a try as soon as I get something to eat. When you say "scream" exactly what do you mean. Thanks

I tried the test lifting the air sensor barand the ignition on, and I did not hear anything. I tried it a couple of times for a second each, but no noticeable sound was heard. I guess the next step is to to check the fuel pump.

Cool No start SC...............

Check the fuel pump relay fuse and holder. Make certain that it is clean and that there is a reasonable amount of spring tension on the fuse. This fuse has caused many SCs to not start!

If you have a pop-off valve, check the seal and make sure the glue has not blown out.

I am still searching for the cause of the non-start. I have checked the pop off valve seal, and it is okay, I have checked the voltage from the fuel pump relay, to ground and have 12 volts, but I do not have 12 volts at the fuel pump itself. I have runa seperate ground wire from the relay to the pump and attached and re-checked, but still no operation. I plan on running a seperate power wire from the fuse box directly to the fuel pump to see if that works. Anyone have any other suggestions, I am stisll not getting any noise from the engine compartment when I turn the ignition on. Thanks
Chuck

it really sounds like a small scream.

so you think the fuel pump is dead?

Well if it doesn't run with a seperate ground and power wire to it, I would guess that it is. I don't know what else would prevent it from operating once it has voltage to it. I 'll follow up after this last test.

I am really confused now. When I applied a temporary wire from the battery directly to the black wire terminal on the fuel pump, the only thing that wanted to operate was the starter???? I removed the temporary ground wire and repeated the test with the 12 volt source, and again the only thing that fires is the starter. I would replace the fuel pump in a heartbeat if I knew for certain it was bad, however there doesn't seem to be a way to apply power to it from the fused area, to verify that it will not turn on. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Chuck

Chas,

When you turn the ignition to the ON position and go to the engine compartment listen to the CDI do you hear whining noise. If you don't and assuming no recent electrical work done, IMO it is your CDI unit.

If you want to isolate the fuel pump, pull the red fuel pump relay, then apply 12 volts to the fuel pump.
Sounds like when you were testing you had the ignition on, which would back feed through the red relay to the yellow wire to the starter.

I checked the spark to the #1 plug and I was getting a spark, which I think would isolate the CDI unit, but I am not getting a whining noise, just a slight purring form the MSD. I'll pull another plug and redo the spark test today. I'll also try isolating the fuel pump again with the red relay out, and see if either shows a failure.. Thanks for the tips guys.

to test the fuel pump, pull the red relay, use a fused jumper (across 87 and 30 ???) with the ignition "on " fuel pump should whine, when you jumper these two terminals..

(Some one pls verify pin nos Please.)

also sounds like you had a warm start -re start issue.Maybe compounded by storage.
Troubleshooting a warm start problem involves a pressure test with a cis gauge ,checking fuel pressure and residual fuel pressure (fuel accumulator may not hold residual pressure to start car when warm),csv or injectors. could be a clogged filter, varnish in fuel (unlikely). just a few thoughts. Where's Gunther

I pulled the red relay out, and installed a jumper directly between the black wired post(power)on the fuel pump and the positive terminal of the battery. I got nothing out of the fuel pump. I also installed a jumper directly from the ground terminal of the battery to the ground terminal of the pump and also got no action or sound from the pump. Unless I am missing something, I think the pump is gone. Thanks guys

replacing the fuel pump

I had to replace my fuel pump in my 70T, and rather than spending a mint on a new OEM one, I purchased this one.
High Pressure Fuel Pump MSD-2225 from Summit Racing. Lot cheaper, and much stronger. hope that helps.
