short shift kit issue

I have a 72 911 T, I recently purchased a used shifter from a 73. It has the short shift kit installed (non factory). Fits great, feels great but I have a h** of a time hitting third.

I can hit fifth and reverse without any issues but hitting third and forth is difficult. What do I need to do to rectify this, I guess I will have to adjust the linkage. Any suggestions or knowledge that I can tap.

Thanks in advance,

Not that I've done either of these, but people talk about changing the bushings and adjusting the clutch cable maybe.

Which aftermarket kit is it? If it is the weltmeister kit, you should throw it out and replace it with the factory short shift kit. My car came with the weltmeister kit and it was a POS. Way too short, so the planes 1-2 were dangerously close to 3-4. I was afraid I'd money shift it eventually and installed the factory short shift with all new bushings in the linkage and coupler.

It really isn't a big job and you don't even have to jack up the car or lay on your back either. I think the factory short shifter now is available again, if I remember right. When I bought mine, it was NLA and the parts places started charging extra for the few they could still find. If they are NLA, you may find one in the classified section if you place a wanted ad.

Good Luck!

Here a few pictures for ID:

The weltmeister kit in package (Sherwood (911pcars) posted this in an earlier thread) What about a Short Shift Kit?

And the kit installed. The tell tale sign on the weltmeister is the big spacer under the housing (from Help Identifying Shifter in 915):

Here is what you are after. The entire factory kit. Bill V. posted this in the first thread referenced.

Have fun!

George

So, the factory kit is listed for years 72-86. What options are there for those of us with, say, a 1970 911S?

thanks!

I went for the WEVO coupler and the WM SSK and it's amazing, I don't hace ANY problems with it, I changed the bushings and installed the coupler at the same time... It is wonderful... Like John Cramer said I wouldn't trade it for any aftermarket shifter...

Install a 73-86 915 shift housing and remove its reverse lockout pawl. Same bolt pattern to mount onto the tunnel. Shift pattern and detents are inherent in the gearbox, thus the shift lever merely transfers the proper shift motion into the gearbox.

This is our kit installed on a modified 915 shift housing. There are other manufacturers that provide similar shift features.
