3.2 vs 3.6 conversions - issues?

Hi,
I'm planning to buy an early911 or 74-77 911 coupe with 3.2 or 3.6 conversion to use as daily summer driver.

I have read a lot of positive recommendations here for the 3.6 conv (both Vram on non-Vram).

However my local Porsche mechanic is recommending me to find a 3.2 - claiming that the 3.6 is taller and that there is not sufficient room in a pre77 type chassis. The results should be that engine mount can not be made properly and the engine may hang too low => limiting clearance and giving lots of other problems.

In addition the double ignition should make a 3.6 more sensible and less reliable than a 3.2 - and more expensive to maintain.

Any body here with experience on this who agree or disagrees ?

PS. if you are looking to sell your car, let me know asap.

Best regards
Peter

Peter,

You should do a search on this site, there is a TON of info on this. Type in ( 3.6 conversions) and your gonna get a million pages to look at.

The 3.6 is the way to go over a 3.2 100%, NO QUESTION about it. If you buy a late model 3.6 that does not have any sealing problems the 3.6 is a very reliable motor.

The dual plug is a HUGE, HUGE plus. The only problem they have is that you have to service the belt inside the distributor, that about $150 max to have someone do it. Everybody that has single plug motors want dual plug set ups and it cost alot to have all the machining work done. The 3.6 is ready to rock.

As for the Vram... yeah its a tight fit but it fits perfect and is very happy in a early 911. There are pics of this motor in long hood 911's (72,73 ect..)

Oh, and find a new mechanic that knows what hes doing... doesnt sound like he does.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Peter i am in the middle of a 3.6 conversion right now , i have a 1980 cab upgraded to a 1989 slantnose cab. I purchased a motor for $7500 with brain and dme all wires, the conversion kit to adapt to the car was $1800 came with all the wiring engine mounts modified to fit , flywheel, cam engine block off, i got a sachs power clutch kit $450 , and a custom stainless steel exhaust for $2595 with heat .Clearly it is alot of money but like Hermen said the twin plug is a great upgrade , I was going to go the 3.2 way but when you compare aplles to apples to find a 3.2 it will cost about $6500 To $8000 depending and for a 3.6 $7000 to $9000 , With the 3.2 its mairly just bolt in and run the wiring and the dme under the seat with no additional parts needed you can use the same clutch and flywheel . The 3.6 is a little more work to do but in the end you will have 94-95 993 Non Varioram Tiptronic ROW 272 HP@6100, 290 to 302 hp with a chip and exhaust! Compared to the 84-86 USA Carrrera 207HP@5900 9.5:1 CR and if you chip and exhaust this engine about another 25 hp then you got no twin plug. The 3.6 fits no problem in the back the only thing that dosent clear the deck lid is the air intake , all you have to do is take it off and replace it with a cone filter. . At the end a 3.6 will cost you about $11500 to $14000 depending on what you want , and a 3.2 will run you $8000 if you have the extra 4 or 5 Grand go for the 3.6 this way you dont have to worry about honda civics pulling up to you and making you look bad lol! Hope i was of some help and good luck
George

Herman, George

- Thanks for the replies.

Yes - I have spend hours reading stuff on this. But most of this is about what to do. Not much about the results and especially not the downsides from this conversion - only apprecials. But then maybee there are only upsides ??

George - did you finish your conversion yet ?
Herman - did you drive one yourself ? (your sign. dont show any?)

I havent even started my conversion yet got everything here ready to go except for my exhaust which will be here this week hopefully , I got a really good stainless steel exhaust and it is only fabricated when you order it and takes about 4 to 6 weeks , i could have used the 993 stock headers and modified the flanges for heat they would have cost around $500 to $750 and just got a stainless muffler for $1250 so for $2595 i got an all stainless system with heat and horsepower. As soon as it gets here its going to my friends garage and the install begins , it shouldnt take long its usualy around 24hrs or so of work , thats what they say i will see about that . The guy i got all my parts from says hes doing the conversion in 12 to 14 hrs .

Hi - just to conclude on this issue.

Im now the happy owner of a 73 911E converted to 3.6/993 non-varioram - and can confirm that this is something!.

The car, I bought from a Pelican member Pete911 - is VERY well set up, conversion seems to be done nice with a lot of additional oil cooling. (My highest respect to Pete).

Only thing you need to be aware of on the conversion is that the heating is easy to set up for the left side while the right side heat exchanger is more difficult to connect.

272bhp stock (no cat) and the torque from this engine in a 2300lbs car is hard to describe .

I'd like to see a Civic try to take on my longhood 3.2. For that matter, there aren't too many cars out there with a weight/HP ratio of 7.73 (2125/275) like I have with my setup. Factor in its mated with a close-ratio 915, and the mighty 997S with 8.82 (3131/355) has difficulty. Proven on the street too...names witheld to protect the innocent!
