Yes. that is b/c your ol pad was "falling off and apart" -- hence not doing anything.

Agreed. But it was still heavy, which supports my opinion that the weight of the sound deadener is not necessarily related to it's effectiveness.
Increasing the mass of an object won't stop it from vibrating. That's what dampers are for.
