Can anyone here run an engine# to check stolen or not?

I have a line on a 3 liter and am waiting for the engine#. It is not in a car, so to be prudent: anyone here willing to run the # through whatever system police would use. I am not about to get into that mess knowingly!

Is the engine in Miami? Just curious because if it is the guy has been evasive providing specific details. If it's the same guy.

Donnie,

The system is NCIC (National Crime Information Center) run by the FBI. You can read about it on the FBI site. You can access it through a friendly local police or sheriff department.

I say “friendly” because they need to know you and be willing to do some work if it comes up “hot.” The issue the officials have to deal with is they don’t want the crooks to be able to see if their stolen cars/engines, etc. are listed. Another is if there is a hit, they are required to follow up. Budget issue in some jurisdictions.

You need to do this in person. I recommend you have the seller’s name, address, contact info, engine number, type number and more. Can you get the VIN of the original chassis?

As a citizen, I go to the top level and explain what I want and who I am. Of course my involvement goes back 35+ years. I helped jail quite a number of Porsche thieves with helicopters, wires, long lenses, grand juries, FBI, State, local and more.

Go search on Wayne’s great success recovering the Type 912 and even more exotic engines a year or few ago.

It is all of our collective responsibility to be pro-active preventing Porsche theft and help putting the crooks in jail. You are correct; question the source of the engine, require documentation and check NCIC.

Best,
Grady

That was a joke or stab at the thread regarding an engine that wound up in TechArt's hands that shouldn't have. There is a thread on it around here.

you and everyone else. I think he wants someone to offer to pay him to ship it. Then he runs with the money, that's why he won't respond about a local sale.

Well if this “sale” is a scam, why not catch the crook? We can have a Pelican version of MSNBC’s “To Catch a Scam Predator.”

Let’s find a US Postal Inspector and a US Attorney and set up a sting with a Cashier’s Check via US Mail. All we need is official instruction and supervision. The perp could see 20 years in a federal prison.

Email me the info and I’ll try.

There are several prosecutors and many attorneys on the Forum who can help. Quite a number of Pelicans have posted (on OT) about scamming the Nigerian scammers.

Best,
Grady

Your kidding right ,this is the banana republic of Miami Dade county none of the local officials give a crap about that here. My neighbor just had some one try to scam her over the INTERNET with a bogus cashiers check for her house nobody in local law enforcement cared less. had my pick up stolen twice got it back due to lojac they wouldnt even dust it for prints when I asked the said they were too busy and just be happy I got it back.

The postal inspectors are a different breed than most cops, they will research, and follow up on ALL issues. They are some of the best investigators out there.

How is western union safe? Do they do escrow service, or guarentee you will get the product?

It's not. Western Union is the least safest form of transaction. Even Western Union admits it on their website. It is safe for sending money to people you know (students, relatives, etc.). Strangers? Say to your cash...

I'll second that. You pretty much have to be a bank robber or murderer to attract attention of law enforcement here in SoFLA. Scam capitol of the U.S. as far as I'm concerned.
