Can some one identify this part please

Please can someone identify the item in this trunk-
The item in question is on the left side of trunk with two hoses (fuel) going into it.
Is it a fuel breather? or vent.
I have two hoses which run to this position with nothing attached! what am I missing?
They are rubber braided hoses pos. 1/2:" I.D. maybe 3/8".

It looks like an evap. collector for the fuel tank....but am not sure of that.

My hoses as far as I can see are attached to nothing! just sitting there in the front pan. Am I in any danger, or just leave as is?

Def charcoal cannister. Part of emissions system. Takes gas fumes from tank when filling tank or sitting, and holds them (instead of venting into atmosphere) and then sends them to engine to be burned. Very rarely fails. check how your fuel tank is vented

Essential:
The car will run better with it correctly connected. You may be subject to inspection (lots of jokes about Fr. authorities...). If so, then it is definitely essential.

Danger:
- The question is how much danger... Fuel fumes are likely coming out somewhere and they are near the battery (!) So there is some elevated risk of a fire or small explosion.
- There is also more risk from breathing the fumes - in the garage & in the car itself. That is not a huge risk for an adult male -- but if your kids play in the garage, or if your pregnant wife is breathing the fumes, then yes the risk is significantly* elevated for birth defects, developmental abnormalities, & etc. Is it very high in comparison to other chemical exposures in the environment? Probably not. But it is easy to solve this one.

Solution:
search on fuel + charcoal + canister + emissions and various combinations of those for the many threads - BUT the layouts are for US cars...

Be sure to use hose that is approved for fuel vapors - regular PVC hose is not adequate.

Thanks Warren- good to see you are still out there!.
I will look into it further and see if I can get parts locally.
On a side note- just had my main engine reseal which involved total dismantling of engine- all components were 100% and clean/non worn. Engine was reassembled and tuned and now runs better than it has since I've owned her!.
