Procooler install in 82sc question

I'm installing a procooler in my 82 SC. Having a problem connecting the new hose supplied with the procooler to the evaporator suction side fitting. The new hose has the newer style O-Ring fittings but has an adaptor that slips into the fitting to make it work with the older flared fittings. With the adapter in place it looks like the male end of a flared fitting. Only problem is the fitting on the evaporator i'm trying to connect it to is a male flared fitting too. It looks like if I sawed off the O-Ring part on the new hose and then flared the end, it would work.

Anyone out there that's installed a procooler in a pre-85 car remember how they handled this?

I have doubts you could effect a reliable, gas tight seal doing this.

When I installed a Procooler in a '74 I made the correct hose/fitting combinations myself.

Based on my understanding of your description it appears the hose fitting you are working with is what's called a male insert o-ring and you were given an o-ring to male flare adapter. What you probably need is a an o-ring to female flare adapter; these are less common. Maybe you can request one of these from the kit vendor. Also, have you checked to ensure you using the correct end of the hose?

If you weren't in the tight confines of the smugglers box you could use a coupling (available in most hardware stores) with female flares on both ends to bridge between the two male flare ends.

My fix, if there is enough hose length/slack would be to cut off the fitting, salvage the female flare from the old hose set and install it on the new hose. One would need to find a hose fabricator with the appropriate AC swaging rig (correct dies) and loose ferrules. I suspect the Procooler kit comes with reduced barrier hose but it may be standard barrier hose - these each required a different size ferrule.

Jim,

Thanks for the response, you always seem to be able to answer all our AC related questions.

I was also concerned that if I tried to cut off the male O-ring fitting and flair the end that it wouldn't seal well.
I emailed Rennaire and explained my problem, they responded very quickly saying that a piece was missing from my kit and that they'd mail it to me, so hopefully that will resolve my problem.

Thanks again for your help.

I forget the guy's name who owns Rennaire, but when I installed my ProCooler he was very helpful and very responsive. I think he puts out quality products at reasonable prices.
