I seen one of the editors for Excellence signature on another thread. Hester, I think.

That's a wonderful piece of engineering -- indeed, I think it borders on art (one of a kind, makes a statement, has the artist's soul and passion evident in its execution). Well done!

I'm chiming in that your workmanship is absolutely top-notch. I'm willing to bet that SubieSport magazine would be interested in your build.

Again, props!

Hey man, thanks for the kind words, and the tip on SubieSports. I sent Travis a quick e-mail about the project and we'll see what he says if anything.

As far as Excellence goes, I sent a quick message to them too and a short outline of the project along with a link to this thread. I got a suprisingly quick response from Pete Stout. I was shocked . I mean I was flattered that he even took time out of his day to respond to someone like me, and on top of that, he had some nice words to say about the project too. He did say "Let me cook on it from a readership standpoint,however..." so that could just be a nice way of saying that it's a no-go. Maybe some Pelicans should drop them a line and support the idea. Either way, even if nothing ever happens, I'm just thrilled to be accepted into some parts of the Porsche community.

WOW, I just got a quick response from Travis at SubieSport and he seemed pretty supportive of the project too. It's so cool to that I'm actually being taken seriously by the "automotive community" in some form or another. Where's the blushing smiley icon?

yeah GREAT project.

I've been wanting to do a 3.3 for a while (A friend has a bastardized shell sitting around). I've got a 1.8L in my 912. the SWB guys freak a little, but mine's a total bolt in.

BTW. you should certainly post this over on NASIOC in the Subaru Conversions forum.

there's a couple of 914 guys and me over there. There's even a couple of VANagon guys.

HAHA, I'm still trying to figure out if I am going to make any kits for sale. I've come to the conclusion that the only way the 3.3 SVX engine will work is if the engine is solid mounted. If people are okay with that then I might make a few kits. The biggest issue is the width of the engine between the timing belt sprockets. I'm afraid that if there is too much movement, the timing belt covers would rub (mine are really close to the factory Porsche motor mounts on the chassis). If it weren't for that issue, I would be more willing to commit to building kits. Now the other option is using the EZ30 or EZ36 engines. These are the next generation of Subaru six's and they are a much more compact powerplant. My next project will be to fit one of these newer engines in another 911 chassis, and build a dedicated race car. I will probably build a roadster out of a Targa, and use the 3.6 EZ36 engine with a turbo. Everything else that I have developed (other than the headers) will transfer over, I will just have to design new motor mounts and use a stand alone engine management system. For now, I'm just going to enjoy the car with the engine it has.

your thread / project made it to nasioc

first: your fabrication work is magnificent

second: a few things that might help

#1 the coils, as mentioned above they crack and fail. the newer (02+) coil on plugs have the igniter integrated and are far better
check this thread
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1192028

#2 ecutune makes a rom replacement for the stock ecu
http://www.ecutune.com/

again awesome work

just re read your last post there are actually 3 EZ engines
EZ30
EZ30R
EZ36
the R and 36 are CAN bus ECUs and have imobilizers ... which as yet have not been swapped without a stand alone
the ez30rs that have been swappped are using the hydra and the link gen3 (with new firmware nov 07)
the ez36 is not a good candidate for forced induction as it is basically a 3.0 stretched to the limit
the ez30s that have been built for forced induction get into the Porsche prices.. the EG33 with low compression pistons may be the way to go

where you got liked from

Thanks for those links and the info on the engines. Maybe a low compression EG33 IS in my future

Great work. Really amazing.

I have another angle for the discussion, if I may. I love the 911 engine, and we all know it is quite reliable (albeit expensive to maintain). What is stopping me from using my car as a daily driver is the lousy A/C (I yanked mine out), the horrific defrosting capabilities, and the burning-feet but freezing hands aspect of the heat.

I noticed that the Renegade Hybrid 914-Subaru conversion use a proper heater core, which appeals to me.

You made an allusion to heat in an earlier post, but how are you going to stay warm?

Oh, wait. You are in AZ... I suppose it isn't a prime concern!

I didn't read the whole thread. I am too ADD for that. Nice work and glad to see you getting such great support from the Porsche community.

A couple of comments by way of information for people thinking about a turbo application for this engine. I didn't see this mentioned in the first 6 pages of the thread and apologize if it's a repost.

The Ej22T engine from the 91-94 Legacy turbos have the same bore as this six banger. It's a very common swap for the SVX guys doing turbo stuff to just replace the stock pistons with Ej22T pistons to drop the CR down into the mid 8's.

Also, there is a turbo kit for this engine. The company is called FAT aka Forced Air Technologies. I don't have any clue if their piping would fit without the confines of the 911 chassis, but something that could be looked at for idea. However, given kcpaz's fabrication skills I would think that if a turbo(s) were going to be introduced, he'd do his own bending and come up with his own solution.

There's also an Austrlian operation that makes a blower for this engine. I don't recall their name, but some searching in NASIOC should reveal them. They come up from time to time. They use an Eaton Roots blower and place it under the intake manifold, replacing the manifold with their own that's very close dimensionally to the stock one.

Again, nice work and thanks for sharing the process...

Okay here's the official weigh-in...

Total is 2378 pounds.

The weight distribution is 65% rear to 35% front. I'm not sure what stock is so maybe someone can shime in with those numbers. I didn't bother with a corner balance because I'm still going to lower the car and do some new bushings and torsion bars.

To be honest, I'm really suprised how light it was. I mean isn't a stock SC somewhere in the 2600lb. range? I still have a full interior with stereo and stock seats. I'm pretty happy because I'm still planning on a fiberglass hood and some RS door panels. I'm also planning on installing a weld-in roll bar (44lbs) so I will be adding some weight there, but I will also remove the rear sound pad, add racing seats, and probably do a perlon (spelling) carpet kit. my goal is to get it down to 2299lbs. maybe some lexan windows and manual regulators are in my future too

Yea, your fabrication and work is awesome. I have done a decent amount of fabrication on my EZ30R H6TT build for my Legacy but I can't say I am close to as good as you. This is an awesome project.

I love seeing these threads and projects progress over time. I did a similar one over on nasioc but sadly I don't think I'll ever see the fruits of my labor due to certain circumstances I am likely going to put my built and sleeved EZ30R up for sale.

Keep up the great work, I'll def be checking back frequently to see progress.

Very nice work.

Renegade Hybrids told me the Subaru wouldn't work for my 912 (looks like they might be wrong) so I bought a 914 for the engine but liked it so much now I want to put a Subaru in each!

Has anyone used the "Toyjet" rear wing cooling system, he claims it cools a supercharged LS1 in a 911, if so it would cool a 300 hp Subaru and I think he says only 35 pounds for the wing/radiators/fans. I don't want to cut the 912 up for the radiator, and would like to keep the heat out back. But I can see where that would make the weight bias worse. Is 65/35 with you and gas in it?

I am interested if you sell the engine cradles. Or maybe even just payment for a set of fullsize blueprints. Or maybe the "complex" parts, to save hassle on shipping, etc.

Also, the new 3.6H6 looks great also more money, do you know if this is a direct fit for the SVX? I think they are a little smaller and lighter. I read an article that the new H6 will bolt right in place of the 2.5 4 cyl., both motor mounts and bellhousing.

Again, great job on workmanship, innovation, and having economical fun with these cars. Reminds me of pulling my 356 engine in my childhood using a scissor jack and a skateboard :-) skip s
