You get mad props from me on this project, the sound is incredible. Can't wait to hear how it drives.

Sounds and looks fantastic!
You must be wetting your pants waiting for those throttle cable bits to show up. Perhaps you can get a trained monkey to sit in the engine compartment and work the throttle for you until then! ianc

Guys here are pretty turned on by the thread - it's always nice to see a certain enthusiasm for a project underway....but it's surprising to read the posts here with guys giving big 'thumbs up' - in the 'appearance' or aesthetic aspect of the build.
If others besides myself wouldn't mind telling you 'how flimsy' something or other looked in the engine bay --- it might offer you more constructive commentary as to the end result... Believe it or not, there is a kind of 'jingoism' that happens when guys gather around a build project. No one wants to be 'impolite' when the majority of folk are 'psyched up' for it. Count me in as supportive of the effort being made. Lots of sweat- equity gone into it. However.....1) The intake manifold imo is a real unpleasant thing to see, as a casting in general goes. Something could be done to radius many of the contours running left and right. It's Subaru's fault...not yours. It may flow alright...but it 'speaks' overall -- that it cost Subaru roughly $12.50 to build it. 2) Grinding it could help out a great deal... to end up with a nice piece of hardware. Then maybe sanding it to about 240 grit. Just a thought.. ...I have physical discomfort when the shots of the manifold are shown closeup. ![]() Agree however, that the 'sound' is exciting on the video. ![]() _____________________ |

I guess I can see what you are talking about with the sand casting, but I don't see it as that big of an eye-sore. I mean Porsche castings have tons of flashing and "crack looking" lines all over them. Not to mention the quality of Porsche castings is a disaster (ask anyone who has welded on a tranny case, or engine case, new or used). On the other hand, I had to weld on the Subaru castings a few times on this project, and I have to say, they are pretty good. Almost as good as factory wheel castings which DEMAND a quality casting and high purity. I've had Porsche castings that actually could not be welded because there sere so many impurities in the aluminum
![]() I had thought of having the intake manifold powder coated wrinkle black or red like the factory STI manifolds, but I'm not sure I want that much "flare" in the engine bay. I don't want it to look like I have a bunch of "aftermarket" parts in there (I will need to have the thing emissions tested when I'm done). I do however want to get the intake pipe, and air box coated so they blend in better. BTW, I'm all for some constructive critisizm at this point. I don't need anyone telling me that I'm stupid for doing this, of how it's not a Porsche anymore. But if someone sees something that they would do differently let me know. I'll try to be a good sport ![]() Last edited by kcpaz; 12-21-2007 at 05:08 AM.. |

Well it was PITA, but the throttle cable/linkage is done and tested
![]() I used factory parts for everything from the linkage rods, to the bell cranks. Of course I had to modify a few things ![]() All I have to do now is grease the CV's, assembly the axles, and bolt them on and I should be ready for a test drive. I also have to replace one of the -20 fittings because the one at the radiator drips a drop every now and then once the car is up to temp. Sucks when you get a bad fitting when they are $60 a pop ![]() I will have some action footage posted this coming weekend. ![]() |

I'm using two different TIG machines depending on where I happen to be doing the welding. If I weld at work, I use a Miller Synchrowave 250DX. If I'm at my brother's shop, I use his L-TEC TIG machine, (I can't remember the model number but it's an old machine) The Miller is awesome on the DC settings, but I prefer the old L-TEC for AC current (aluminum). I don't' know what it is about the L-TEC, but I find it easier to weld aluminum on that machine.... especially on stuff thinner than .090". BTW, I think I remember someone telling me that L-TEC was bought out by ESAB, but I'm not 100% sure on that. For the money, I don't think there is a better all round machine than the Miller. It's not that it can't weld aluminum well, I just have a preference for the other machine.

the red/orange hose can be found at most speed shops that deal with road racing. It also comes in black.
Just a quick update. I DROVE THE CAR TONIGHT!!!!! It's not 100% done, but it's safe enough to drive it under it's own power. Drove it around the block and to the gas station to get some gas. The thing is a TORQU MONSTER! It's definetly faster than a stock SC. I will get some video tomorrow in the day light so you can see for yourself. Next step is emissions testing, then paint. |

secret agent kcpaz.......hey just wanted to say that uncle billy and i had a freeking BLAST the other day with you guys terrorizing the countryside!
following the "i think im turning japanese" mitsui from hell was way cool watching your suspension work. that damn thing has some serious beans. looking forward to the upcoming "thats BLASPHEMY" viewing ! you must get pictures of this. a certain sum juan is gonna have POO running down their legs. a coupla "MEATBALL" jap flags right on the front quarter on both sides of car would look very menacing to that certain sumjuan. better yet show up with a jap pilot kamakazi doo-rag and some old goggles! that ought to put him on "MEDS" for life! this is a classic case of "IVE BLINDED THEM WITH SCIENCE!" |

Great job! Aside from the alternator, that engine bay looks a heck of a lot like that of a Carrera 3.2.

Oh, this is great! I really like the sound and the installation. Now imagine installing a ITB-stack (Of a Japanese motorcycle, of course) on it and running Alpha-N EFI?? It would sound sweet!
Fairly quick rev-responce as well. What kind of flywheel are you running? I guess throttle-responce is really improved once you don't have power-sapping fan to drive.
