oxg red light indicator on dash?

Hi, i placed a new light bulb for the oxygen sensor indicator on the dash, it stays on. Is this normal? or should it turn off eventually? I didnt drive the car when i made this change, i had car running though...

Thanxs!

be careful with the charge lamp when you plug it back in. The whole socket and wiring needs to stay UNGROUNDED. The red light goes off when the car starts because then the alternator is charging and there is no longer a path to ground. Both sides or leads from the lamp will short if it touches a ground and burn up the wiring either to the battery or to the alternator depending on which side touches. replacing the wiring to the lamp is a major PITA. On an 87 carrera one side goes to the shift light and the other to the alt. Keep the black insulator on the charge light or replace it with heat shrink. If the light stays on sounds like you burnt the wiring to the alternator, and the voltage is flowing to ground through the lamp.

If the wiring to the alternator is burnt, should i remove the light bulb before it causes more problems? All i did was change a simple burnt out light bulb...I remember the insulator was on the charge light properly. How do know if i damaged the alternator?

Oh Noooo! ;0(

The OXS light was there as some sort of service reminder light I believe. You can pop out your tach and or speedo and reset the light.

Yes, there is a box within your dash that is a OXS "counter." It counts something like 30K miles and then illuminates that light. To reset the light (turn it off) you press the red botton on that box. The box is somewhere near the size of a pack of cigs, and is located, I believe, behind your speedo. Pull out your speedo and you should see it.

I had a clicking noise that was coming from that box. So.....I disconnected it. Well actually, I disconnected the box's ground, which had the effect of turning it off. No more OXS light, ever.

Be carefull with the charge light socket. If you burn the wires the car won't charge.
