MSD coil installation question

the advice ive been given is that the MSD Blaster coil will work ok with my stock 83 Bosch CDI system so i bought one at autozone for $45. they did not have the high vibration one so i got part # 8202..the only difference being that it is filled with oil and not epoxy i believe?

I am about to install it and having never done such a repalcement, im wondering a few things.

1. do i just connect the positive and negative wires from the stock bosch unit onto the MSD unit the same?

2. the MSD doesnt have a cover that covers up the wire terminals...is this ok? do i need to be worried about electical dangers or anything?

3. I presume the Bosch cover, which covers the wire terminals just pops off to expose the terminals?

4. do i just yank out the coil wire...the thick rubber spart plug looking wire...off the bosch unit and plug it onto the MSD unit?

5. the packaging for the MSD unit mentions a ballast resistor is needed for a points system. i realize i dont have a points system, so i assume i need nothing else for this to work safely?

6. the instructions say that the oil filled one (that i bought) must be mounted upright...i just noticed this... does anyone know if this is absolutely true? if so, ill return this and search for an epoxy filled one. i dont understand why this is true if the stock bosch oil-filled one worked ok for 24 years mounted upside down.

i have not touched anything yet as im afraid i might break something and or melt my electical components

don't use that one upside down or it'll have a short life span.

use the one other pelicanheads recommend or search Early_S_Man.

use dielectric on connectors.

understandable that not every guy around here has 40 years of permanently greased fingernails so if you live close to me bring it around.. no problem.

what is dielectric?

i live in rochester now. but, i used to live in Long Beach for years..on Vermont Street. how i miss living on that awsome beach!

1] yes

2] dielectric will seal the connectors from water. Dielectric is expensive looking vaseline. Don't use silicone sealer, RTV, etc. They are not vaporproof.

3] yes

4] coil wire.. turn the rubber boot on top of the coil so it's not creating a seal preventing wire removal. It it doesn't twist peel it back. As the boot is twisted pull out the wire. Use dielectric on the wire and inside coil terminal.

5] don't use a resistor

thanks. this is helpful. that photo brings back memories. i used to love to sit on the beach and watch the airplanes coming in to JFK, the concord fly over, and one time, Airforce 1 flew over and shook the house like an earthquake. awsome. i miss long beach alot....except for those traffic lights on the main strip!

when i lived on vermont, my bedroom window looked down at the neighbors garage who had a perfect porsche 356. looked almost brand new...i think it was beige with gold trim. in 2 years i think i saw the guy take it out 1 time. perhaps you have seen it. the last house on the street..on the beach.

re: the original bosch coil
im wondering which terminal is + and which is -. i cant tell. one wire is brown with a yellow line and the other is a cream color, or beige. if i put a new coil on, im not sure which wire goes where. the original coil does not have a + or - marking. there is a "A" near one post. this is a 1983 sc -i have checked both the bentley book and the 911sc companion. neither indicate which side is + or -.

thanks. that helps, and its correct. i pulled the coil off, cleaned off the gunk and found the - and + markings. im an idiot. i never spent a second thinking about cars and how they work until i got this car. im learning.


if some newbie reads this...the brown wire with the yellow line is the negative....at least on my car, assuming the wires are factory. for some reason, the bentley book's wiring diagram shows these wires as white and black....which was no help at all, nor does it lable them as positive or negative.
