OK so now I see how it goes on.... crap :(
here are a few pics I have (taken with a 9 year old dig. camera (sorry for qualuty) But you can see what I mean: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809755.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809781.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809796.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809815.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809826.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809847.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809863.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809878.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185809894.jpg You can see there is no lip its all smooth (for the most part)... also the last pic is from the outside with a light on in the inside.... its visible from both sides (the gap I mean)... Not sure what I will do... I am thinking on glue ?? On another note can you tell me what that piece is that I am missing on the corner of my dash? I am missing left and right... Let me know your thoughts... PPI said nothing of this..... |
looks like your top sits too high do you have shims in? The canvas should sit down on the body so the seal doesn't show when installed it also looks like a bracket was fabbed to hold the canvas down I am not sure if this is just part of a later roof or not maybe someone else can answer that. The part on the dash might be a trim piece Idon't have that on mine. Did you do the conversion or did you buy it that way? Try looking at the link on this page http://www.rennlight.com/howto/cab/index.html for more pics of how a cab conversion should be done includeing the factory conversion manual on the page helped me greatly.

Also the hole next to the adjusting screw has a 6mm stud there I see you dont have that it helps hold the roof down tight against the body and tension the back of the roof an important anchor point for the roof you can drill and use a screw there to fix that point. The factory instructions give measurements where to put the stud\screw for proper tension.
|
yeah, I have ben looking at that site.... The car came to me this way so its what I have to deal with... There are no shims.... I wonder what I can do to get the top to come down to the body.... Not sure. But it does bother me...

Ok look to see if the bracket you have your top bolted to has a depression or is it flush with the quarter panel. If it is flush with the quarter panel and is not filled with body filler you are pretty much screwed. My recommendation would be find a good welder and get the factory brackets from Pelican parts take the roof off completely and armed with pics of what you need have a GOOD welder install the factory brackets and channel/studs you need as you see in the factory manual they TIG weld in the new brackets and use heat paste to keep from damaging the paint then the top will sit low enough to get the clearances you need with it sitting this high the seals will not help much to get rid of that gap and the roof will be properly reinforced so when you do put power to it it wont twist during operation. It sounds like alot to do but if the panel is sound all that needs to be cut is just enough to fit the new bracket also go into the wheel well and clean and paint the scorched metal also I sealed the gaps under there with seam sealer and then sprayed generous amounts of undercoating to make sure no water would get to any bare metal and rust away. Also see if the welder has weldable primer he can use during this process and it will give you a little more insurance that rust cant get a foothold, I am pretty sure that they did not remove the remnants of the targa bar from the fender so there are alot of metal edges up in there to trap dirt and water if you dont seal it well from the outside. Good luck let me know how you come out. A well done job will look great mine looked fantastic bfore I took it back off to bodywork the car!

Your 5th picture shows the leather trim with a bolt to tension the rear of the roof there is one on each side be careful they are fragile if you adjust them I broke one of mine, next to them is a hole in the trim that fits on a 6mm stud on the factory install some have drilled a hole where the stud goes and used a screw to hold that down. On my pictures with the seal you can see the stud with a nut on it about 2 inches behind the seal. Hopes this helps.

Well I just took a look and the there is a depression, and it looks like with the pivot bracket sitting in the depression the top of the bracket is flush with the body... I also looked under like you said and I see the area where they welded and they did not cover anything so its starting to show surface rust... Going to at least take care of that this week (sand and primer and undercoat?)... As far as the fabed brackets.... not sure what all that would cost... may need to save up my money for a future project? That stud in the back... what does it screw into? I don't see anything on my top it would attach to.
|
If you can compare the bracket in your car to the pics of the bracket on the link above you may have lucked out and not have to change the bracket the main concern from looking at your pic is the non stock seat belt attachment that the person that did this didn't use stock brackets and therefore the anchor attachment on the pivot arm did not have a secure point for mounting. Dont forget to use the seam sealer to fill any gaps I get mine from Eastwood.com and instead of using primer I would use either their rust converter or rust encapsulator or both ot seal and stop the oxidation then seal and undercoat works like a charm on my restored 76 chevy blazer that has to put up with road salt. refer to my previous post for the stud location I think it is clear if not I will try a better photo.

seam sealer prevents dirt and moisture from getting up there and breaking down your paint
|
so to clean up the underside I need seam sealer to fill in the gaps (trying to take a pic now) and rust encapsulator.... is eastwood the only place to get these? And undercoating to blend it in.
Should I get it sandblasted? or just get in there with wire brush and sand paper to clean it up? On the stud, I see it in your pic but I dont understand where that stud would connect to on my top? |
the rust encapsulator is branded to eastwood and is good stuff the seam sealer if you dont want to buy from eastwood it is also good stuff in the chalking tube version can be bought at an auto parts store do the seam sealer after any hotwork and the rust encasulator then undercoat. did you figure out the stud thing?
|
I still dont see where that stud connects to on the top.... I think the tol bracket the made will do (not as good as the factory one but strong) If you can picture it like this... there looks to be a piece os 1/4 inch channel the welded in verticle with a pices of 1/4 inch flat stock welded in to the sede of it (seat belt bracket) then in side the channel they welded vlatstock threaded for the top piviot. not bad but crude... I am thinking as long as I can clean it up and get the gasket in there with the trim parts it will be ok (I hope)... Its a nice car, just needs some tls to bring it up to speed...
Here are some pics of the underside: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819850.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819862.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819873.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819889.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819914.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819941.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185819982.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185820554.jpg |
Nice use a wire brush to clean off any loose under coat and rust flakes spray liberal amounts of rust encasulator on the whole area it doesn't have to look pretty just cover with a good heavy coat let dry and fill all the holes and folds of metal with seam sealer let that dry and then liberal amounts of undercoating. the rib and small tab on the top of the quarter panel hold the seal in place try the rivet method to replicate you can use jbweld to give it some rigidity I will send photo of stud.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185821213.jpg
disregard the other highlights I did that for Ok. for. when they sent me the parts I needed, but the 6mm stud is marked and up and to the left is the tab that hold the seal in place yours can be longer and straight since you have no rib in place if you dont do this the seal will flop around and work its way out since it has nothing to hold it in place and gluing it down would not let it move with the top when you operate it. |
I will order the rust encapsulator and seam sealer and undercoating now... after I do the work (or during) Ill post pis to show how it went. Ill also check all the other wheel wells to be safe. For the stud, I see the pic that shows the location on your car and in the pic above, but what does it attach to on the frame of the top?
are these the things I need? Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Black Aerosol 16 oz Seam Sealer Black Ultra Flex Rubberized Undercoating Aerosol 18oz if so I will order today or tomorrow... try to get the work done this weekend. You have been a lot of help.. thank you for your time. And you think I should try to pop rivet the lip in there for now? if so where would I get the material to do that? Should it be stainless steel? I like your idea for the long strait piece... Wonder where I can get the stuff to do it with?? |
also if you look on the diagram on the first page part number 11 and 12 are rails... would these be what I am looking for?
11 OEM-91156128300 Rail 1 $41.10 12 OEM-91156128400 Rail 1 $41.10 |
The 5th picture you posted of your interior roof the leather trim that goes all around the back of the roof you see a screw toward the outside next to that is a hole the stud goes in that hole it will all be clear when you get the stud in place or screw whichever you choose.
|
you mean this one? there is already a screw here on both sides. Could be a bigger one though:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185823905.jpg Also are those items above what I need from Eastwood? Think I am going to order now if so so I have it for this weekend. If you were here I would buy you a beer. |
