Skunkworks?
Hello, Milt's wife here. I saw where Susan Moreland (I think that's her name) posted a spy shot of her husband's latest invention a while back. You know, these guys spend too much time on this stuff. So, here is a spy shot of the latest thing going on in my back yard. Notice that he's got an Altima cover on the Carrera. Trying to be sneaky, I guess, but I can't drive it when it's like that.
He says this is the culmination of all his thinking for several years now. He needs to put that car together and get in the house. ![]() |

I can't wait to see the finished project. Looks like an adaptation of an long hood bumper with plenty of space for a large oil cooler cut out.
Thanks for the peak, Looks good Zeke!

Looks like a rear bumper sitting in front of a car with a cover on it.......
Cheers

I've been violated!
Ack. My rear has been exposed. At least she didn't expose my front.

My husband has been working on some stuff in the back of his shop for months. I don't know what he's doing but he's got this sneaky smile on his face. Sometimes he talks in his sleep. The other night he said "it's all coming together, the vision, fusion". I don' t know what make of it

Hey Susan, how are things with the family? My wife's name is Susan, as well. I guess you "spies" have more than one thing in common.
![]() Yes, I'm guilty of spending way too much time as if I had plenty. At least Chuck does it with an economic goal in mind! I love his mind and wish I had one half as good. Oh, and my Susan has a Boxster. Weird. |

that c2/early rear bumper would leave plenty of room for a turbo set up.... hmmm. Milt, are you thinking of sliding further down that slippery slope?

Oh great… Every time Chuck comes up with something new I end up spending a bundle, and his new project just sounds expensive.

"Never show an unfinished project to a child or a fool"
Oh well, I'm the fool.
![]() Yes, about half of it is still missing (from the bumper part to the splitter)and needs to be formed somehow. I'm working on it. Any suggestions? |

Wow that really looks interesting and full of potential.
And thanks Mrs. Milt for the photos. ![]() I posted a drawing similar to what I think you are doing with the front a while ago, but I saw it more having 993 type headlights, and sharper edges. ![]() I can't wait to see the results. I hope the lady friend sneaks into the workshop a little more frequently. Cheers Rich

use cardboard to form - and glass in (if it's going to be flat. If it has a complex curve use two part foam to make a plug = then sand it down to form it out = glass and epoxy over it.

I'm concerned that the light housings/lens are rotated down from the horizontal line of the lower fender seam. I'm afraid it might look a bit wonky if you don't keep the original cutoff line of the fender... or is that an optical illusion because you've moved the t/s boxes forward?
I'm understanding the bumper concept better, and I think it will come out well.

Very cool Milt. I have a somewhat similar idea for a project with an SC bumber and an early s bumper grafted to the bottom. Just haven't had time to get the S bumper from a friend down south to see if the lines are close enough to try it out. Anyone know if the early bumpers have the same width and contour as the impact bumper cars?

Yeah, the shape I have in mind to close the gap is parabolic giving way to flat as it rounds the corners to the wheel arch. I may have to foam it, but that's not my favorite medium. I used to have a few dozen pounds of automotive styling clay when I was in the fiberglass business. That would come in handy about right now. The first rough mold will most likely be plaster. Out of that I can get a workable part to add flanges, etc.
Rich, that's a nice concept. I like it. Good and simple. A good design will be simple rather than too busy. I will put in a Cayman like front opening, though. But not the 2 openings abreast of the center one. Yet, I might add something for the front brakes. I have to take these things slow because it changes daily. Already I've made significant changes from the original concept. I really didn't think I could get the early turn signals to work in the overall shape. I was so stoked when they started to come into possibit, I could stop working. My knees are trash. One thing I can't do is design on a CAD. I can't see the shadows and reflections on a monitor, which to me are the essence. So, it's carve and shape as you go. And the car has to be on the ground so I can see how it looks from a normal standing perspective. Hard work for an old man. Edit: Bill, the housings are parallel to the ground plane. That's what I mean about having the car on the ground. It can play nasty tricks on the eye. BTW, everyone, the housings are on loan from techweenie. Thanks, man. v8, the bumpers are not the same by a long shot. All of the various versions of the '74-'89 bumper including the IROC, etc., are what I wanted to change. The nose of the car wants to flow down seamlessly like the newer cars, but not be a newer car, if you know what I mean. Last edited by milt; 07-30-2007 at 11:01 AM.. |
