I think it would be okay to get either but you did say you had extra plugs probably left over from the 3.0 if you get the 3.2 relay panel your grommet will be useful for strain relief on the harness and the extra plug goud be put behind it if not in use check the wires with the diagram for your sc to see what it was for my guess is rear window defogger but I am not sure. The backup light switch is up in the front of the trans passenger side next to speedo.

14-pin connector

Mike,

The rear fuse panel in your car is for the rear defogger, wiper, heater blower, and fuse for the fan relay which you don't actually need because your car has been converted to 'convertible'. Except for heater blower/relay in case you need heat.

It looks like the wiring harness is still intact and that's good news. You have to check the wiring (wire color) in the 14-pin connector and make sure they are in the correct position/location. With the engine in the car, it is a little bit tricky to do a 14-pin continuity test but doable.

Once I get hold of a Carrera 14-pin wiring diagram from the shop manual, I could recommend some actions. Good luck.

Tony

To be honest I am not sure what fuse panel you should get. If everything is working with the exception of the backup lights, blower motor and alternator, I would get the 3.2 panel. If other things are not working they may need the SC panel. I notice the SC panel has a couple of relays that the 3.2 panel does not. Maybe get both and then resell the one you don't use?

Isn't myrddin's coil supposed to be vertical? That looks like a Bosche oil coil that needs to be mounted vertical.

I know on the Carrera's they are vertical, but Porsche seems to place the coil in whatever spot they could find. On the earlier models they were semi'horizontal on the fan housing with the "top" angled down.

I don't like what I'm reading. Makes me wonder where did they install the DME brain?

As you know I have a 3.2 swap on my SC and can take pics as required.

Aren't you close to Don's shop (Air Cooled Classics)? (username PorscheDoc).....

gsmith660 08-02-2007 06:37 AM

Thats true Mike where is the brain?

myrddin 08-02-2007 06:59 AM

I am pretty sure the brain is under the drivers side seat... I am going out now to take some pic's and I think I will start with the 14 pin... I know there are some broken wires there so I want to show those to you guys first. I will then find a way to get under the car and get the wire color off the backup switch and see if it can be matched near the 14 pin.... will also try the same with the alternator wires.. will report back in an hour or so (or however long it takes). I will also try to get a pic or info off the box under the drivers seat.

On another note if it would seam I only need the heater blower to work off the relay panel... I may just get the 3.2 since as stated above that it will remove some of the strain on the harness going to the alternator... the rest can be fitted to it or secured behind it. I would just like to get it back to factory looks and then once I get it all over with I would like to detail my engine compartment... unless I keep finding jacked up stuff on the car.

back in a few... and once agn, I cant thank yo all enough.

ErVikingo 08-02-2007 07:16 AM

Mike,

If the harness is not looking to shabby, get a DME harness and stop messing with this one. You can get good used ones and will save a ton of headaches IMHO.

You'll have to tell me who did that PPI so I'm sure not to go there ever? Was it the shop I visited?

Cheers, Juan

myrddin 08-02-2007 07:25 AM

That guy that rebuilt the transmission in Davie Florida did it... I wish I would have gone to some of the other ones you told me about. Man was that a mistake... Ill report back in a few.. I just sent the money out for the 3.2 relay panel... he is going to over night it so it will be here by Saturday....

I think some trouble is in that 14 pin... give me a min to get some pics and you guys tell me what you think.

just say no to PPI when you see this sign:

OK, I cant find the backup switch (I cant get the car up real high due to bad jack) but on the pass side I see a round gold circle with a wire or 2 coming off of it...

for the 14 pin this is what I have:

Male
1 - yellow
2 - red
3 - green with black stripe
4 - black with purple stripe (purple could be gray)
5 - green with yellow stripe
6 - red with white stripe
7 - blank
8 - blank
9 - green with white stripe
10 - gray with red stripe
11 - blue with white stripe
12 - green with red stripe
13 - yellow with black stripe
14 - blank

female

1 - blank
2 - yellow
3 - green with red stripe
4 - green with black stripe
5 - gray with brown stripe
6 - blank
7 - blank
8 - blank
9 - blank
10 - gray with white stripe
11 - blank
12 - blank
13 - red
14 - yellow with black stripe

On this end there were 3 broken wires:
red
brown with black stripe
yellow with green stripe

also there were 2 loose female pins with o wires on them.

whats next? looks like this 14 pin is a little jacked up?

gsmith660 08-02-2007 08:44 AM

That should be it.

myrddin 08-02-2007 08:46 AM

I may want to double check the colors to be real sure (was dirty) and was agrivated because I couldnt find the backup switch....

Let me know and Ill keep looking

you mean that should be the back up switch? I am going back out and ill get a pic... this didn't look like any back up switch I had seen in the past... usually there a plug and screw in, this was round and flush with the transmission with a retainer bar that screwed into the transmission and was holding the thing in... had no plug but had wires coming out of it... right next to the pass side axle.

I'm going back out (this switch isn't in the area of the shift coupler is it (inside the car in the rear floor board)...

going back in for pics...

brb

gsmith660 08-02-2007 09:16 AM

By my wiring diagram the wires should be Grn\yell and Grn\brn from the backup light switch and what you found doent sound like it on the 915 trans the backup switch is back by the shift rod with a boot over it

gsmith660 08-02-2007 09:19 AM

Ill take a picture of my switch as soon as I get some charge on my camera batt.

gsmith660 08-02-2007 09:26 AM

The cut grn\yell is probably your backup light from the engine harness and should go to the grn\yell wire on the other side of the 14 pin

The round flush sensor with the retaining bar is the speedo sensor (I think).

The backup switch should be right next to the shift rod in the front of the trans where it goes into the tunnel.

myrddin 08-02-2007 10:17 AM

OK, here is what I see... (you got it Kaefer)

reverse switch:
green with yellow stripe (or green / yellow)
gray with brown stripe (or gray / brown)

they go to 14 pin plug but are you suspected gsmith the green yellow is broken... the brown grey is on pin 5

he has red wire and black wire going to the factory set (yellow green and grey brown) - Does anyone have the real plug that goes to the reverse switch? he used 2 cheep male wire connectors....

plug
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1186078922.jpg

so where on the 14 pin should these wires be for sure?

gsmith660 08-02-2007 10:29 AM

Yes that is correct the grn\yell is not hooked up and on your pin out I dont see a gry\brn wire on your male side is it missing? Also do the numbers on the male and female match up ie pin 5 on one side match pin 5 on the other side? on my 14 pin which is a 76 the 2 wires for the backup light switch are opposite each other on the block one is in 5 the other is in 12 for example.
