rear fuse panel install on a 1982 3.2 swap...

OK I decided to dedicate a thread to this problem (other one started out for the heater blower)

I need to put a fuse panel in my car to complete the 3.2 swap (I guess) that th eprevious owner did. I noticed the heater blower did not work the other day, then saw that the reverse lights did not work... then I thought I would test the charging of the alternator, well it also does not work. Not sure how PPI missed all these things... would have been the first thing to check in my book since it was an alteration. Any how Do I need a 3.2 panel to get it to work?

see pic below:

I have found this to use - silver one - (Just dont know for sure if its what I need):
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185962197.jpg

I dont know what all does not work due to this missing plate but I wish it was there...

The car is a 1982 targa converted to a cab... also had a 3.2 swap. I just bought it, it looks pretty good (will need a paint job on down the road - plenty of fish eye/flexed bumper and what looks to be specs of overspray or rust in the paint in a few spots)... but over all it really does look good and man does it run well... I had them rebuild the tranny (915) before I got it so I would not need to mess with that. here is a current pic:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1185990657.jpg

Long story short, I cant even register the car because there are no backup lights, and I cant trust it to drive because there is no current charge (battery will die on me Im sure).. Can someone help me fix this delima... I mean do I buy the 3.2 plate and install it and start with whatever? I dont know what to do. If I just put the 3.2 plate in and match the wire harness to exactly what it should be will it work automaticly or are there other things I need to do because its an 1982 car?

Help

I looked at your post. The wiring is definitely not right. All the connections between the engine wiring harness and the chassis wiring harness are being made in the front of the engine near the bulkhead rather that at the engine fuse/relay panel.

I am guessing that the PO who did the engine swap did not install a relay panel and took the shortcut of making the connections directly. This will definitely cause the type of problems you are seeing if the wiring was not done carefully. Using the shortcut makes the job more difficult because the factory wiring diagrams cannot be used.

You need a engine fuse/relay panel like the one in the photo. You will also need to understand the wiring diagrams for the SC chassis and the 3.2 engine to make everything work properly.

tom, any thoughts on who can fix all this for me? I may be able to figure it out but lack the tools and time to do a proper job. What would you say it would cost me to have someone make it right (after I buy your relay panel). Also if they just didn't put that panel in what all would not work? I mean could it be as simple as putting your panel in and connecting the wires off your harness that you have attached to the panel to the ones I have on the 3.2? I have put in a call to the dealer who sold me the car but no return call yet... thinking it will be one of those sorry about your luck deals.

If I had your panel and someone know what they were doing... how long you think a job like this would take?

:(

It looks to me like all the proper connectors are there, it is just that there is no fuse panel to hook them all up to. I think you are going to have to snip the tie wraps holding that mess together before you can figure out how long a proper installation will take.

myrddin 08-01-2007 12:19 PM

Kurt if I go out and cut the tie wrap and spread it out, would you be able to give me your thoughts? If so Ill clean it all up and take a few pics to show every connector and wire...

ipapilot 08-01-2007 12:19 PM

I realize this is probably a case where the dealer may tell you to pound sand, but if the car is not even registerable due to the backup lighting I would at least discuss that fact with them.

That would certainly help. I can compare it to my '86, plus I have the Bentley manual for the electrical schematics.

myrddin 08-01-2007 12:30 PM

I can take more, just tell me what I can do to help you help me?

There are 2 of those round plugs, one on the main wire harnes and the other is off the harness that goes to the coil. That red wire that is cut right before that square box is hot 12 volts constant... you see there are about 5 grayish wires cut and strapped to the big wire harness and the rest should be easier to see.

Doesn't look to buggered up. Some of those wires definitely are not stock! When I get home this evening I will try to get a few pictures of the fuse panel in place and we can start working on sorting out the wiring.

myrddin 08-01-2007 01:19 PM

thanks Kurt... I am going to get the 3.2 relay panel on the way so I will have it to work with....

PcarPhil 08-01-2007 01:29 PM

That's a great looking car. Get the wiring sorted out and start enjoying the car!

myrddin 08-01-2007 01:33 PM

thanks Kaefer... that help brighten things up a bit... Hope it all works out.

Wire Harness Rehab......

Myrddin,

Just looking at the pictures of your engine compartment makes me wonder what kind of Porsche mechanic would ever do that kind of work on a 911. To correct the wiring in your car, you must go back and analyze the actual wiring set up you have now.

Your problem is not that difficult to correct but will need some 'real time'. If you're just a few hours drive from me, I'll be there to assist you. But we could do it via digital camera and emails.

I will post again what I did 2 weeks ago with the motor I bought from a fellow member.

Motor running:

Front view:

There's really nothing sophisticated about this set-up. It just connecting the dots together (proper wirings) and the engine will run good.

I will be more than happy to assist you in the wiring 'rehab' in your car. PM me and we'll start from there. Good luck.

Tony

Here are a couple of pics I just took of my '86 showing the correct installation of the fuse panel:

This one shows where the 14 pin connector goes and also the test socket for setting the idle:

This last pic is to see if I can take a decent picture of an electrical schematic page:

myrddin,

This part of your story caught my eye. In California, a dealer cannot sell a car with some of the items you mentioned not working. What are the laws in your state? The dealer should be responsible for supplying a safe, sound vehicle on the road. Your statement that the car will not even pass inspection verifies the dealer's possible negligence. The expense you're about to encounter could possibly be the responsibility of the dealer.

myrddin 08-01-2007 06:38 PM

Wow Kurt V... nice pic's... So you only have 1 round plug... that you say is for testing or setting idle... I have at least 2 that I know of... One is connected to the same harness that goes to the coil, the other one is off the harness that goes to the body. I am going to try to order the panel in the morning so I can get started....

ossiblue, I line in Indiana... bought the car from Florida... paid a PPI to inspect it... he said it was real nice but needed transmission work... I paid out of my pocket 3500.00 to have the tranny rebuilt and clutch redone... thought I was all set... now I am another 1000.00 and climbing in parts not in the top (gaskets and such) and other items... I am all out of money (literally) and now I find this.... I have not heard back from the dealer but Ill try agn... I am guessing he is going to avoid me, and with him being 16 hours away he most likely will get away with it. I will never trust another persons words agn over long distance on a deal like this.... knowing that it had a 3.2 transplant this would have been one of the very first things I would have checked if it were just me and I would have caught it not even knowing a lot about the car.

Any way if you guys are willing to help I guess I have no choice but to move forward and fix it all the right way... who in there right mind would rig a 911.... crazy...

Rot 911 08-01-2007 06:46 PM

Let's try to keep this simple for right now. The heater blower will not work because the fuse for it and part of the electronics is on the fuse panel you will be installing. Reverse lights are easy to figure out, just need to track down the wires on the schematic. For the alternator, I already posted the charging circuit. We will work on the rest as you go along.

gsmith660 08-01-2007 06:51 PM

myriddin, looking at your electrical if you get the relay panel and start to plug and chug into the panel most of this will sort itself out you can go under the car and see what wires are in the backup switch and then find those wires at the 14 pin and see what wire it goes to then using the wiring diagram for the sc make sure it corresponds to the same wires for the backup light switch in your chassis harness as for the alternator you can do the same thing but I would check the alternator to make sure whoever did that didn't fry the thing. On a side note I would get your money back from the mechanic that did the PPI he didn't earn it.

myrddin 08-01-2007 07:15 PM

thanks guys... Ill order the relay panel in the morning and start doing research for you to help me (if you don't care..) I will get under the car and find out what color the wires are off the backup switch (you know the location on a 915?)... after I find that I will see if I can find them at the 14 pin area... after that I will figure out what color the alternator wires are (they are the original ones on the 3.2)... One thing I see is that there are a few wires cut or broken at the 14 pin plug (see below) I may need to replace this as well....

Question for my order in the morning on the relay panel Will that 3,2 relay panel bolt up and work for me for sure or since I have a 1982 car (had a 3.0) should I get a SC relay panel and work from that... I am ready to pay pal the money for one or the other....

You guys are to cool... I hope to repay you all somehow or at the very least buy some beer to celebrate...

let me know on the relay panel so I can send cash... I will throw in a bit extra to try and get it for the weekend or as soon as I can get it....
