Did you build a booth in your garage? Thinking about doing something similar.

Spent most of Saturday painting. Front bumper is also done. All thats left is the hood, rear flares, and rear bumper. I bolted the fenders to the tub this morning, its looking great. The color is something else, its definitely unique. Once all the pieces are bolted up Im going to wetsand and buff the whole car, its going to need it. But for now the paint needs to breath and harden, its going to be a few days before its ready for any further surgery.
Before ![]() ![]() After ![]() ![]() Next step is to start basic assembly. Im going to paint the engine compartment with white Por-15 brushed on. Once everything is mostly together I may take it into have a rollbar welded in, I haven't decided yet.

Base coat is complete. I'll probably wetsand and buff but that will come later, and I may put some stripes on her but I don't have immediate plans right now. Doors will be going together soon, I'll be brush painting the engine compartment, and I'll start mounting the front oil cooler soon. Then she'll go in for a cage, then interior, then drivetrain. Thats the plan.
I like the color, it looks like a battleship. Never mind the flare fitment, they aren't fully secured in place. ![]() ![]()

Matt - your car's looking great! Could you snap some photos of how you attached the front and rear bumpers? Are you still happy w/the fit and quality of the Rennspeed bumpers? Tom

Tom, I can take some photos of the brackets but they are nothing special. Just some square stock welded to some plate steel. The mounting points in the Rennspd bumpers were nowhere near a match for the factory shocks. And yeah, Im really really happy with the fit and quality of the pieces. I had some doubts and fears about going with them, but I would definitely recommend these parts to others. The only concern is that they need custom brackets so some basic welding skill is required. Larry- nice to hear from you, we haven't chatted in a long time. I hope to catch up with you out autocrossing in the coming season Cdrik- I think the forum has rules about posting pornography!

Brilliant project and concept!
That's how it all started; almost sixty years ago a couple of Germans in a shed in the Austrian Alps, bending metal and bolting modified VW parts on. Good luck with your project. Cheers, n. _ http://nicolashunziker.com |

Great project and pictures! I really like the battleship gray color idea, maybe take it one step further and apply a mottled camo scheme like they used on the old BF110 night-fighters!
Oh, and Costco would like their carts back, thank you. Brilliant.

Thanks for all the encouraging words guys, Im excited to see it finished as well. To answer some of your questions:
- Tools and paint were cheap but only because I did it on the cheap. Harbor Freight spray gun ($35) and tough industrial grade paint ($250) with a big Craftsman compressor (borrowed) and some other various supplies ($100) is about all I used. For the sake of my freedom in the state of CA I'll say that I painted it in my garage. Learning the gun took some time and there were parts of the car that needed re-spraying so don't think you're going to get professional grade work on your first go. I'll be wet sanding out some of the defects and buffing (buff machine is like $250), but the rest I'll leave as "character enhancements". I could have had Maaco do the spraying for a few hundred bucks but I really wanted to do this on my own. - Yes, the fenders are riveted and it looks badass. I had them attached that way on my Targa too and the look is something else. A lot of the ToyoCup PRC cars do the same thing and I think it adds a touch of bad-guy to the project along with the battleship gray paint. Im in the process of moving to a new house so I haven't done much work on it lately, but I've got the engine compartment painted in fresh gray POR-15, the front splitter and brackets are attached, and the lights are in. It looks sick! I'll put up some pics soon. Thanks again for the support guys!

Forgive me Pelicans, for its has been months since my last update.
Over the last few months I've been swamped with work, with moving into a new house, and taking on a new job at work, so the car has really been moving slowly. I've been digging into it lately though and its gone really well. So far: - Engine and trans are in - Interior work has started - Half the suspension is done - Bumpers have been mostly fitted Still a lot to go, but for now I'll tease you with this shot from earlier today: ![]() I still can't believe its mine.
