Looking good Matt! I assume you're using the 3.0 from your targa, but are you switching to carbs?

Cooler is mounted, lines are finished, front bumper is mostly done. Still need to finish the mounts for the rear bumper though.

Finished mounting the rollbar this morning. I took the bar from my Targa and made new near arms and mounts, no sense in selling it and trying to find a proper "coupe" bar, it fits just fine.

Had to order new CVs to fit the '75 stub axles, mine were setup for '74.

Putting in the headliner and dash this week but we're going on vacation on Friday morning so I probably won't finish. Ivory headliner, black vinyl everywhere else.

Girlfriend has given me a target date of August 16th to have it running, its a stretch but Im fairly confident it'll happen.

Consequences of failure?

After a few weeks of tracking down an electrical gremlin, the car is running and can be driven under its own power. It still has a few issues before i can go and flog it though: the rear suspension isn't fitting correctly, the windshield needs to be installed, as well as the wipers, air blower, and stereo.

Im in love though:

I did happen to come across "emptyo's" project the other day, the widebody '69 that he's got painted up in gray like mine. I have to say though, I much prefer my polished wheels to his black.

Matt -
It looks like you've installed your front bumper w/4 dzuse (sp?) fasteners - is that all that's holding it on? I'm interested how you set that up. Do you have any photos of the brackets w/the bumper removed? I've installed a similar bumper recently on my car and just used some screws/bolts thru the existing fender holes, after ditching the stock bumper shocks. Quick & easy removal would be nice!

Yeah, I need to get some pictures of the internals, but for now i'll give a brief description:

I made brackets to fit the standard mount points of the stock bumper. The fiberglass bumper has studs in the general area of the studs on the original mounts but they are pretty far off. So, in front the bumper is supported by the studs sitting unbolted in my brackets with the zdus fasteners holding the bumper into place. The studs go through my mounts but are not bolted in place, the zdus holds the bumper to the mount.

On the sides, I made small brackets that drop down from the fenders, thats all that keeps the sides supported and upright.

I hope you can get a mental picture from the description, words may not do it justice. I did a similar thing with the rear bumper, the exception being that Im only holding into place with dzus fasteners on the sides, nothing at the mounts.

Im a bit embarrassed to take pictures actually, the mounts are pretty ugly. Getting the bumpers to fit right was a serious challenge, one that required lots of cutting, welding, and hammering... a few of the mounts look like they came from Frankensteins workshop. They are stout though, not going anywhere.

Thanks for the description - I get the gist of what you've done. If you're not too embarrassed, I'd still love to see some pics! I've McGuivered (sp?) plenty of things on my car, so I know where you're coming from.

Thanks,
Tom

Dashes are overrated

The dash I had in the car had a few problems: It was the original dash from my '74 targa that I had tried to recover a couple of different times. The most recent recover was shrinking and pulling apart. Also, the glue I used would cook in the sunshine and along with the vinyl would leave a nasty oily residue on the windshield. Gross.

I've had enough messing around with old parts, so its out. Instead, I've taken some aluminum sheet, cut it to fill the holes and gaps in the dash, and riveted them into place. The speaker panel is held in with allen screws for easy access. I made a shade panel to extend over the gauges because the lighting reflects on the windshield at night.

For the top, I bought some black carpet from Kragen, says it's fade-resistent but we'll see right? I've siliconed some velcro strips to the dash to hold the carpet in place. I'm not done fitting it yet but I'll toss up some pics when its done.

Overall Im happy. Its much better than the old pad, its lightweight, and its easily removable.

Also, took the car down to the 24Hours of Lemons Buttonwillow a few months back and a random guy took some nice pics of it. Found them on Flickr a few days afterwards:

Tonight I started digging in under the hood. Relocated the battery to the smugglers box where it belongs. I'll need to pick up some audio termination blocks and a cut-off switch to finish the job, the ugly work is done.

Made a bracket out of some aluminum sheet stock and put some bungees under it to hold the toolkit and jack-pad to the car in the old battery location. I hate the thought of that stuff just sitting unattached to anything under the hood, flopping around.

Also started work on fitting the fiberglass hood I've been carrying around for a few years now. Its in rough shape but its so much lighter than the stock one.
